Explanation

This couplet lists four outward marks of a high family. The first is "nagai", the sweet smile that is always on the face. Welcoming visitors with a bright face is a sign of a family's good nature. The second is "eegai", giving gladly to others what one has. The third is "insol", sweet speech that cools the hearer's heart. The fourth is "ikazhaamai", not despising even those reckoned lower than oneself, but respecting them. A family in which these four are together is the "vaaimaik kudi", the truly high family.

These four qualities do not come from wealth. Even a poor man can welcome with a bright face, share the little he has, speak sweetly and honour others. So they are the true measure of family honour. A big mansion and many fields do not decide family eminence.

In Hindu tradition there is the practice of regarding the guest as a god, "atithi devo bhava", which the Taittiriya Upanishad stresses. To receive a guest with a pleasant face and sweet word and to feed him is the foremost dharma of the householder. Valluvar elsewhere says as well to welcome with a face that is kindly and looks pleasantly.

Some commentators take "vagai" as the way or part, others as classification. These four we can practise in daily life.

A story

The House with a Bright Face

This is an imagined tale; its setting is the month of Margazhi in a village of the Thanjavur district.

In a village near Thanjavur lived an old man named Kandasamy Mudaliar. His land was not large and his house was small. But in that village whoever lost his way, at whatever hour he came, would find food and water on the verandah of Kandasamy's house. Whoever came to his house was welcomed with a bright face. His wife Valliammai had the same nature.

On a cold morning in the month of Margazhi a cart-man from another town, new to the village, came to Kandasamy's verandah, drenched. His clothes were dirty. Kandasamy welcomed him with a bright face. "Come, brother, it is very cold; first drink some hot gruel," he said. He made him sit down and covered him with his own blanket.

The cart-man hesitated: "Sir, I am a stranger to you, only a simple cart-man." Kandasamy smiled. "Brother, a guest is God. There is no high or low in it," he said. Valliammai served hot food. The two of them asked him with sweet words about his family, town and journey.

He stayed one day in that house and left. In later years he became a big merchant in his own town. Every year in Margazhi he came to Kandasamy's house with sacks of paddy and new clothes. The villagers looked at that house and said, "This house is high not by wealth but by four things: a bright face, giving, sweet speech and not despising."

To reflect on

When someone arrives at your door or your desk, does your face, hand, voice and respect welcome them before your words do?
