Explanation

The previous couplet named rectitude and modesty. This couplet names three: conduct, truth and modesty. From these three the well-born "izhukkaar", do not slip. To slip is to put even one step wrong. The well-born do not allow even that small slip, because the name of their ancestors is always alive in their mind. Conduct refers to action, truth to speech, and modesty to the feeling of the mind. That is, mind, speech and action, the three instruments, remain pure.

In Hindu tradition the purity of mind, speech and body is said to be the foundation of dharma. When these do not contradict each other, a person is truly good. One who has one thing in the mind, another in speech and another in action leads a double life. The couplet's message is that the well-born are not so.

See here the place that the Puranas give to truth. The story of Harishchandra appears in the Markandeya Purana and the Devi Bhagavata. Some commentators take "ozhukkam" as good conduct, others as the customary observance proper to the family. In both the key is that the three stand together as one.

Conduct, truth and modesty are like a three-legged stool; if one leg breaks the whole structure tilts. Some are truthful in word but disorderly in action, and some show discipline in action but feel no shame when they err. Only one in whom all three stand together is a fully well-born person.

A story

Harishchandra's Truth

The story of Harishchandra appears in the Markandeya Purana and the Devi Bhagavata. Harishchandra, king of Ayodhya, was born in the Ikshvaku line. He became famous as one who always spoke the truth. Once when the sage Vasishtha praised his truthfulness, Vishwamitra did not believe it. "I will show that he gives up truth," he vowed.

In a dream Harishchandra saw himself giving his kingdom as a gift to a sage. The next day Vishwamitra came, pointed to it, and asked for the kingdom. Without refusing anything, Harishchandra gave his whole realm. Then the sage asked for a thousand gold coins as the fee for the gift. Harishchandra went to Kashi and sold his wife Chandramati and his son Rohitashva. Then he sold himself too to a keeper of the cremation ground.

At the cremation ground he did the work of collecting fees for cremating the dead. One night his wife Chandramati carried in the body of her son, who had died of a snakebite. She stood helpless without money to cremate him. Harishchandra recognised his wife and his heart broke. Yet he did not leave his duty. "Without the fee I have no order from my master to cremate," he said. Chandramati prepared to tear off a part of her saree and give it.

At that moment the gods appeared, and with them Vishwamitra. He wondered at and praised Harishchandra's truth. His son came to life. His kingdom too was restored. The story shows the glory of the Ikshvaku line, which would not let go of truth and conduct in any suffering. Modesty was the shame he felt at the very thought of breaking his word.

When keeping your word becomes costly, what keeps your mind, speech and action pointing the same way?
