Explanation

The simile in this couplet is very beautiful. The moon shines high in the sky, so even a small blemish on it is visible to the eyes of everyone in the world. A person of good family stands in a high place, so his small fault is visible to all. In ordinary darkness many stains stay hidden. But if a spot is on the shining moon, it stands out by itself. In the same way, even a small error in a renowned family is widely talked about.

This may seem unjust, but it is the responsibility of a high place. One with more light should be more watchful. Society sees them as models and follows their acts. So their fault does not remain personal but affects many. Valluvar says this both as a warning and as a compliment: you are high like the moon, so be pure accordingly.

The Puranas have many stories about the moon's blemish. The tale of the curse Ganesha gave the moon for laughing at him is well known. Some commentators take "maru" as a stain, others as the form of a hare. In any case, the flaw of the eminent is easily seen. Teachers, leaders, parents and elders are all watched and followed, so their pure way benefits not only themselves but all who live by looking at them.

A story

The Moon and Ganesha

In texts such as the Ganesha Purana comes a story linking the moon and Ganesha. One day Ganesha, riding his mount the mouse and eating a large modaka, went on a round. His belly was large. Suddenly the mouse saw a snake, took fright and ran. Ganesha fell to the ground. His belly burst and the modakas scattered. Ganesha gathered them, filled his belly again, and tied that very snake around his waist.

At that moment the moon in the sky saw it and laughed. He was proud of his beauty and light. The moon was not one to laugh easily, but that day the pride in his heart made him scoff. Ganesha grew very angry and cursed him: "You are proud of your beauty; now you will lose your light. No one will look at you."

The moon was stunned and distressed and realised his fault. With tears he begged Ganesha's pardon. The devas and sages pleaded for him. Ganesha said the curse could not be entirely taken back but that he would modify it. "You will wane and grow again. One who sees you on the night of Vinayaka Chaturthi will incur blame," he said. From then on the moon had the cycle of waxing and waning. Tradition says the blemish on his face also remained.

The story recalls the simile of the Kural. One in a high place cannot hide even his small pride from the world. One laugh of the moon became a permanent blemish on his face. The lesson is that the well-born must be especially watchful in every word and act. And the humility with which he recognised his pride and begged pardon won back part of the moon's standing.
