Explanation

The final couplet of the chapter shows the difference between greatness and littleness by the yardstick of how they treat the faults of others. "Atram" means another's lapse that should be hidden: weakness, poverty, error. When a great person sees it, he does not expose it but covers it and protects that person's honour. The small person hunts down the fault and proclaims it across the whole town.

The reason is the mindset of the two. The great person knows he too has faults, so on seeing another's fault he feels compassion. He covers a fault not to defend it but to give a chance to reform. The small person tries to hide his own fault and shouts about the faults of others, trying to create the illusion that he is high. But this only reveals his littleness.

Krishna and Kuchela of the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana is a fine example. Some commentators take "atram" as a fault that causes shame, others widely as bodily defect or poverty. In any case, greatness protects the honour of others.

In today's life too, the manager who calls a colleague aside and corrects him with affection, and the relative who visits a poor friend with a gift bag and protects his self-respect, show this path. The mouth that does not speak of others' faults is great; the hand that guards them is holy.

A story

Krishna and Kuchela

The story of Kuchela, also called Sudama, comes in the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. In youth Kuchela was Krishna's friend and fellow student at the ashram of sage Sandipani in Ujjain. Later he lived in poverty. His wife Susheela, seeing the hungry children, pleaded, "Your friend is king in Dvaraka; go and ask him for help." Kuchela hesitated to ask, but at his wife's insistence he set out. Not wanting him to go empty-handed, she tied a small handful of flattened rice, borrowed from neighbouring houses, in a torn cloth and gave it to him.

At the palace gate in Dvaraka the guards did not believe that this poor brahmin was Krishna's friend. On hearing the news Krishna ran from his throne and embraced him. With his wife Rukmini he washed his feet and honoured him. Kuchela felt ashamed of his torn cloth and soiled clothes and hid the small packet of rice. Krishna smiled softly and said, "Friend, will you not give me what you brought for me?" He took the packet and said, "This is what I love most," and ate a handful with joy. When he took a second handful, Rukmini held his hand.

Krishna never once pointed to Kuchela's poverty or hesitation. He spoke of his poverty to no one. Kuchela asked for nothing, and Krishna did not shame him by asking, "What do you need?" After some days Kuchela took leave. On the way back he grieved that he had asked for nothing. But where his hut had stood he saw a mansion full of wealth, and his wife and children shining. Krishna's act of hiding his friend's shame and filling his lack is still honoured as a sign of greatness.

To reflect on

When you see someone's weakness or hardship, do you cover it with kindness or let it travel? What would change if you always chose to cover it?
