Explanation

Valluvar says the great know and honour the greatness of others, while the small never even see it. "Penikkolvem" is the thought, "Let us respect the great, befriend them and follow their good path." In the "unarchi", the perception and feeling, of the small, such a thought never arises. Even when they see the great, they cannot recognise their height and feel envy and scorn.

The cause is ego. A mind that cannot accept that there is someone higher than itself cannot honour the great. Such a person cannot raise himself either, for the door to learn from great ones is shut to him. The friendship of the great is the largest wealth a learner can gain. One who lacks it does not know his poverty.

Shishupala of the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata is a cautionary example. At the Rajasuya sacrifice, when Bhishma proposed that Krishna receive the first honour, Shishupala could not bear it and reviled him. Some commentators take the couplet as a description of the small-minded, others as a warning against becoming so.

In daily life, the student who respects a good teacher or an experienced elder and heeds his word advances. The one who mocks them stays where he was. Honouring the great is not a favour to them; it is a good done to ourselves.

A story

Shishupala at the Rajasuya

In the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice at Indraprastha. Kings and sages from many lands assembled. At the start of the sacrifice, the highest first honour, the arghya, had to be offered to the most distinguished person present. When Yudhishthira asked whom it should be, Bhishma, eldest of the Kuru house, said, "It should be offered to Krishna; he is the greatest in this assembly." Sahadeva supported it and washed Krishna's feet in worship.

Shishupala, king of Chedi, was Krishna's cousin, the son of his father's sister. He had borne enmity towards Krishna from the start. Rising in the middle of the hall, he said, "With such great kings present, is the first honour to go to one raised among cowherds?" and abused both Bhishma and Krishna in many ways. The assembly was shocked. Some kings joined his clamour. Bhishma said calmly, "Krishna is unequalled in wisdom, valour and dharma; only those who do not know him can speak so."

Krishna had promised Shishupala's mother that he would bear a hundred of his offences. When Shishupala crossed the hundred, Krishna said, "I can bear no more," and sent his Sudarshana chakra. Shishupala fell. He never saw the greatness that stood beside him. Since the thought of honouring and befriending the great was not in his heart, he brought about his own destruction.

To reflect on

Whose greatness have you been slow to recognise because it stood close to you, and how might you honour it now?
