Explanation

Valluvar says humility is the first sign of true greatness. In "paniyumaam endrum perumai" the word "endrum", always, is important. When victory comes, when fame comes, when office comes, the great show humility. They know, and so they also know how much they have yet to learn. As a full pot does not slosh, true eminence has no need to advertise itself.

Littleness, in contrast, "adorns itself admiring itself". It thinks even its small achievement big, praises itself, and decorates itself in dress and speech. Because it is empty inside, it tries to fill the space with outward ornament. The couplet shows that humility is not servility; it is strength made of confidence and knowledge.

Bharata of the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana is a fine example. When rule came into his hands he refused it and set Rama's sandals on the throne and bowed to them. Some commentators read "aniyumaam" as "adorns", others as "shows itself off". In both, the false show of littleness is clear.

In simple life, the doctor of high office who speaks plainly to all, and the student who remembers teacher and parents with thanks for his success, are forms of humble greatness. As humility grows, respect grows with it.

A story

Bharata and Rama's Sandals

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, Bharata's humility is described. By the boon Dasharatha gave Kaikeyi, Rama went to the forest for fourteen years and the kingdom was offered to Bharata. Bharata was then at his maternal home. When he heard of his father's passing and Rama's departure he was in agony. He rebuked even his own mother, said, "If Rama went to the forest on my account, I want no kingdom," and went with army and citizens to seek Rama at Chitrakuta.

There he fell at Rama's feet and with tears pleaded, "Elder brother, you are the king. Return to Ayodhya." To keep their father's word Rama refused. Heartbroken, Bharata said, "Then give me your sandals. I shall set them as the sovereign and be only your representative until you return." Rama gave him his sandals. Bharata carried them on his head and returned to Ayodhya.

He did not stay in the palace but lived in a small hut at Nandigrama, wearing matted hair and bark cloth. He placed Rama's sandals on the throne, laid state orders before them, and ruled in their name. For all fourteen years he did not proclaim himself king. Though power and fame were in his hand, he did not adorn himself; he always bowed. This is Valluvar's "paniyumaam endrum perumai". So the world still honours Bharata as the image of renunciation.
