Greatness · Perumai

This chapter shows that what makes a person great is not birth but his deeds, conduct and lofty aim. The great are humble, cover others' faults and can do rare things; the small are boastful, proud and fault-finding, Valluvar contrasts.

Introduction

The chapter on Greatness belongs to the Porutpaal, in the section on Kudiyiyal, the miscellany of social life. "Perumai" means the state of being great, spiritual loftiness and generosity of mind. This chapter examines how a person truly becomes great. Greatness does not come from outward appearances such as wealth, position or family birth. Valluvar holds that the marks of greatness are a luminous aim, a nature that governs itself, the power to do rare deeds, humility, and the generosity that covers others' faults.

The first couplet sets down the basic difference between greatness and littleness. An unquenched longing for high fame is greatness; to think "we shall live without it" is littleness. The second couplet declares, "pirappokkum ellaa uyirkkum", that all creatures are alike in birth and differ in distinction only by the difference in the work they do. The third says that even in a higher station those who are unworthy are not high. The following couplets set out the way to guard greatness, the acts the great do and the nature of the small. The last part shows humility, absence of arrogance and covering of faults as the life-breath of greatness.

In Hindu tradition the idea that eminence comes not by birth but by quality and action is found in the Bhagavad Gita itself: "guna-karma-vibhagashah" (4.13) says that quality and action are the basis of the divisions. The story of Satyakama Jabala in the Chandogya Upanishad shows that speaking truth gives eminence. In the Ramayana Hanuman, though of immense strength, called himself only Rama's servant. These echo the spirit of this chapter.

Some commentators take "oli" in the first couplet as fame, others as power. The "oruvai magalir" simile is taken by some as chaste women and by others as those of unity in conduct. In any case greatness is born in the discipline by which one governs oneself. This chapter helps us recognise the true marks of greatness in our own lives and avoid the signs of littleness.

Today we often link the word greatness with money, position and fame. In Valluvar's view it is the measure of a person's heart. A teacher living in a small house becomes great when he gives his time and knowledge generously to his pupils. One who lives in a vast mansion yet scorns others remains small. The yardstick lies inside, not outside.

Chapter story

Hanuman's Leap Across the Sea

At the opening of the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana comes Hanuman's leap across the sea. The vanaras searching for Sita stood on the southern shore at the summit of Mount Mahendra. Before them spread the great ocean, a hundred yojanas wide. Angada asked, "Who can cross this sea and reach Lanka?" One by one they said how far they could jump. None could cross the hundred yojanas.

Hanuman sat quietly in a corner. He had forgotten his own power. Tradition says that in childhood, by a sage's curse, he forgot his strength. Jambavan, the eldest, turned to him and said, "Hanuman, why are you silent? You are the son of the Wind; you leapt to swallow the Sun, thinking it a fruit. Your power is greater than this ocean," reminding him of his strength.

Hanuman rose. His body grew like a mountain, and the vanaras shouted in joy. "Like Rama's arrow I shall go to Lanka. I shall see Sita and return. If not, I shall bring Ravana himself back as a prisoner," he said. Yet he did not speak with self-praise. "This is not my power; it is Rama's grace and your blessing," he said, bowing to his companions. Then he pressed down Mount Mahendra and leapt into the sky.

The gods and sages watching from the sky showered flowers. Midway the Mainaka mountain rose from the sea and said, "If you are tired, rest on me." Hanuman touched the mountain with his hand, thanked it and said, "Until Rama's work is done I have no rest," and went on. The rakshasi Surasa blocked his way and tried to swallow him. As she opened her mouth wide, Hanuman took a tiny form, entered her mouth and came out, saying, "Without breaking my word I went into your mouth and returned; let me go." Surasa blessed him.

Finally he killed Simhika, who caught shadows, and reached the shore of Lanka. Shrinking to the size of a small cat, he entered the city by night. The guardian goddess of Lanka, Lankini, barred him, and Hanuman struck her down with a blow; she realised Ravana's end was near and let him pass. Searching palaces and chambers he could not find Sita and his heart sank, yet he did not give up and at last found her beneath a simshupa tree in the Ashoka grove. After seeing Sita he said with great humility, "Mother, I am Rama's messenger, his servant." Though possessed of great power, he did not exalt himself. His aim was high, his power rare and his humility greater. This story of Hanuman shows all the marks of greatness. When he returned with news of Sita he gave all the credit to Rama, saying, "I did nothing; all is Rama's grace," and so his fame rose higher.
