Honour · Maanam

This chapter speaks of the greatness of self-respect, which will not do anything that lowers one's dignity even when life itself is at stake. It teaches humility in prosperity and dignity in decline, and that it is better to die with honour than to live trailing those who scorn one, and that the world worships such persons.

Introduction

The chapter on Honour belongs to the Porutpaal, in the section on Kudiyiyal, the miscellany of social life. "Maanam" is self-respect, the sense that guards one's dignity. The chapter on Nobility of Family spoke of a family's eminence; this chapter speaks of the inner worth of an individual. Its basic message is that guarding one's dignity in every condition is greater than winning in life. The very first couplet sets down this stern counsel: even things indispensable to the living of life must be given up if they cause loss of honour.

The chapter explains honour from many angles. The second couplet speaks of the great manliness that will not do a base act even for the sake of fame. The third guides us in both conditions: humility when wealth grows, and elevation of spirit when means shrink. The fourth to seventh warn that those who lose honour become worthless like hair fallen from the head, that even men like hills diminish by a base act as small as a kunri seed, and that to live trailing those who scorn one brings neither fame nor a place in the next world. The last three couplets, through the simile of the kavari deer, say that the world worships those who do not hesitate to give up even life to guard honour.

In Hindu tradition maanam and mariyadai go together with dharma. In the Mahabharata, Bhishma, Karna and Draupadi are witnesses who staked even life for honour. In the Bhagavata Purana the story of Dhruva, who did tapas as a child to guard his self-respect, is the best example of this chapter. Among the four purusharthas honour is counted as part of dharma.

Some commentators take the stern idea that honour is greater than life as meant for kings and warriors, others for all people. What is stressed here is not arrogance but a nature that will not put a price on integrity. Such honour is a shield needed by every human being.

There are two misunderstandings about honour. One is to think honour is stubbornness or anger. The other is to think honour is the fame given by others. Valluvar rejects both. Honour is the standard a person keeps in his own heart. Not departing from that standard whether others praise or scorn is honour. That is why he says one must not do a base act even for the sake of fame.

The man of honour respects himself and also respects others. He stands upright by his own labour, and where such people abound, deceit and servility decline.

Chapter story

Dhruva's Penance

The story of Dhruva comes in the fourth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. King Uttanapada had two wives, Suniti and Suruchi. Suniti's son was Dhruva; Suruchi's son was Uttama. The king showed greater affection to the younger queen Suruchi. Suniti lived simply and quietly. Dhruva was a boy of five. One day he saw his father Uttanapada lovingly dandling his younger brother Uttama on his lap. Dhruva too ran to climb onto his father's lap.

Suruchi, standing there, stopped him and spoke harshly: "You were not born of my womb. You have no right to sit on the king's lap. If you want that right, do tapas and worship the Lord; if in your next birth you are born of my womb you will get a place." His father Uttanapada said nothing. The boy's face fell. He ran to his mother in tears. That insult sank deep into his heart.

Suniti embraced her son and consoled him: "My son, there is truth in what your stepmother said. Our only refuge in sorrow is the lotus-eyed Vishnu. Worship him." Dhruva did not want to lose his self-respect; neither did he want to take revenge on anyone. He wanted from the Lord a higher place, greater than anything his father could give. Without telling his mother, he set out for the forest at night.

On the way the sage Narada met him. "Boy, why do you come to the forest at such a tender age? Forget the insult; go back home," he said. Dhruva firmly refused. "Sage, I do not want peace; I want a place that lifts my dignity. Show me the way." Narada marvelled at his resolve, taught him the mantra "Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya", and directed him to do tapas at Madhuvana on the bank of the Yamuna.

Dhruva did severe tapas for five months. The first month he ate fruit once in three days. The second, grass and leaves once in six days. The third, only water once in nine days. The fourth, he held his breath. The fifth, he stood on one foot. Vishnu appeared before him and touched his cheek with the conch. Though the boy knew no Veda, he at once sang a hymn of praise.

"What boon do you wish?" asked the Lord. Dhruva did not ask for his father's lap; he asked for a lasting place, a luminous station, which no king had reached. The Lord gave him the position of the Pole Star in the sky. To this day it stands unmoving in the north. The insult Suruchi gave him became for Dhruva an elevation which the whole world worships. This shows the true meaning of honour.
