Explanation

The final couplet of the chapter tells of the great reward for those who guard honour. The world worships and praises the lustre of those who value honour so greatly that they do not wish to live when disgrace comes. "Oli", lustre, is their fame, their power and their purity all together. "Thozhuthu eththum" means to bow with folded hands and praise. The world bows to a man not for his wealth or office but for his firmness in guarding honour. That is the highest respect a human being can receive.

This is a lofty praise. Those who did not hesitate to give even life for honour attain a quasi-divine station in society even after death. In Tamil Nadu there is a tradition of setting up hero stones for warriors and martyrs and worshipping them. People honour them as family deities and protecting deities. The foundation of that tradition is the truth this couplet states.

In Hindu tradition, works like the Periya Puranam honour as the Nayanmars those who bore suffering for the Lord and for their dignity. Some commentators take "oli" as fame, others as spiritual light. In both, the one who guards honour shines as a light for the world.

This couplet is a hopeful close to the previous nine. Guarding honour is hard, and often brings loss and loneliness. But its final fruit is not loss but light. The world will not forget such people; it will worship and praise them. This encourages every honest person, since even the quiet honour unseen today will one day be a light that guides others.

A story

The Light of Nandanar

The Periya Puranam tells the story of Nandanar, called Tirunaalaippovar. Nandanar was a simple hard-working villager of Adanur in the Chola country. He had boundless devotion to Lord Shiva. He made leather goods, drums and parais needed by temples. From what he earned by working his own land he helped in temple services. But in the social order of his time he could not enter the inner part of the temple.

When he went to see Shiva at Tirupunkur, Nandanar stood outside the gate and worshipped. He could not see the Lord directly, and his heart grieved. But he did not blame the Lord, nor curse society. His devotion lifted him higher. Tradition says Shiva, for his devotee, made the Nandi move aside so that he might have darshan.

Later Nandanar wished to see Chidambaram, Thillai. But thinking of his condition he delayed, saying "I'll go tomorrow, I'll go tomorrow", and so got the name Tirunaalaippovar. At last one day he went to Thillai. He stood at the edge of the town and bowed to the gopuram. That night the Lord appeared in the dreams of the brahmins of Thillai and commanded, "Make my devotee Nandan enter the fire and come to me."

The Periya Puranam says that at Thillai Nandanar entered the fire, emerged with a pure luminous body and merged at the feet of the Lord Nataraja. His devotion, patience and self-respect became a guiding light for the world. Though he grieved over his condition, he did not lose his worth. The tradition of worshipping and praising him continues. This tale also shows that, beyond social distinctions of high and low, the Lord values love.

To reflect on

Whose quiet dignity under unfair treatment has lit a path for you, and how could you carry that light for someone else?
