Explanation

The desire for fame can easily draw a man to a wrong path. Cheating for fame, showing false achievements, bringing others down: these may happen. But Valluvar says that one with true great manliness will not take such ways. "Seerinum seeralla seyyaar" means that even when it would bring fame they will not do unworthy deeds. Here "seer" comes in two senses: the first fame, the second worthiness. That is, even because fame would come they will not do what is not worthy.

"Peraanmai", great manliness, is not only valour; it is courage guided by right. To win in battle is valour; to win without stabbing the enemy in the back is peraanmai. To gain fame is skill; to gain it without deceit is peraanmai. This is the height Valluvar shows. It is natural for man to desire fame, and there is no fault in it. But if one pays his integrity as the price of fame, it is no fame but disgrace.

In the Mahabharata Bhishma is the best example. In the war he refused to take up arms against Shikhandi, who had been born in female form. Some commentators take "seer" in both places as fame, in which case the meaning is that they will not do a base deed with an eye to fame.

In life today the competition for recognition is everywhere: in examinations, work, art and trade. Easy shortcuts are always waiting. Those who advance honestly without taking them gain a fame that endures. Fame won by deceit breaks one day; fame won by truth stands across generations. This is the true fruit of peraanmai.

A story

Bhishma and Shikhandi

In the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma was commander of the Kaurava army for the first ten days of the Kurukshetra war. Every day he felled thousands of Pandava warriors. The Pandavas could not defeat him. He had the boon of choosing the time of his death; he could not be killed until he wished it. The Pandavas asked Krishna for advice. Krishna said, "Bhishma will never in his life raise a weapon against a woman, or against one who was formerly a woman. Place Shikhandi in front."

In a previous birth Shikhandi was Amba, the daughter of the king of Kashi. Her life was ruined when Bhishma carried her off. She did tapas to take revenge, was born in her next birth as Drupada's daughter, and later became a man. Bhishma knew this. So when he saw Shikhandi before him, though he had a man's body, he regarded him as the woman he had been and refused to shoot arrows at him.

On the tenth day of the war, Arjuna stood behind Shikhandi and shot arrows at Bhishma. Bhishma could have resisted and even won. But since Shikhandi was in front, he did not strike back. He laid down his bow. The arrows filled his body. He fell onto a bed of arrows. At that time he asked Arjuna for a pillow for his head, and Arjuna made one with three arrows.

There was a way to win: to strike Shikhandi, or to strike Arjuna standing behind him. Bhishma refused, to guard his discipline and honour. He was not ready to do an unworthy act for the sake of fame or victory. So though he fell, his fame rose. Lying on the bed of arrows, the teachings he gave Yudhishthira on dharma have come to us as the Shanti Parva.
