Explanation

The first couplet of this chapter gives the definition of greatness. Greatness is not a title bestowed by others; it is the unquenched eagerness in a person's heart, an intense striving to attain lofty fame and lofty action. This is what Valluvar calls "oli oruvarkku ulla verukkai". "Verukkai" here means intense desire and resolve. The mind that goes toward a high aim without minding the hardships in front is greatness.

In contrast, littleness is to think "let us live avoiding that." That is, saying this is difficult, risky, unnecessary, and abandoning high effort. Such a person may live in comfort, but he cannot reach greatness. Greatness and littleness lie not in wealth but in mindset. The couplet puts a question to every person: what is the high longing that burns within you in your life?

Abhimanyu in the Mahabharata is a rare example. Some commentators take "oli" as the lustre of valour, others as fame. Some say the couplet need not be taken as supporting rash daring; the loftiness of aim is what matters here. In any case, an unquenched wish toward the high is the root of greatness. The student who strives for the first place, the craftsman who sharpens his skill each day, and the servant of the village who widens his service are all small lamps of this light.

A story

The Daring of Abhimanyu

In the Drona Parva of the Mahabharata comes the incident of the thirteenth day of the Kurukshetra war. Dronacharya arrayed the Kaurava army in the chakravyuha, a formation that revolved like a wheel. Among the Pandavas only Arjuna and Krishna knew it completely. That day both had been drawn far away to fight the Samshaptakas. The Pandava army was bewildered.

Then Arjuna's son Abhimanyu, a warrior of just sixteen, stepped forward. "Uncle, I will break the chakravyuha and go inside," he said. Yudhishthira asked anxiously, "Do you know the way out?" Abhimanyu said, "When I was in my mother's womb, of what my father told, I heard only the way in. I do not know the way out. Yet at this time when my father is absent, the Pandavas must not fall. I will go in and make a path; you follow behind."

He told his charioteer to drive the chariot forward. His arrows rained down and felled Kaurava warriors. He broke the gate of the formation and entered. But Jayadratha, by a boon from Shiva, held back the other Pandavas. Abhimanyu was trapped inside alone. Six maharathas, Drona, Karna, Kripa, Ashvatthama, Duryodhana and others, together surrounded him. His bow broke, his chariot broke. He lifted the chariot wheel itself as a weapon.

At last they all attacked him unjustly and brought him down. At only sixteen he attained a hero's death. But the courage he showed that day is remembered by the world even now. Not choosing littleness, saying "let us live giving it up as difficult", he went forward with an unquenched longing for high fame. His life is witness to Valluvar's "oli oruvarkku ulla verukkai."
