Perfectness · Saandraanmai

This chapter describes the nature of the sanror, those full of good qualities. Love, shame at wrong, generosity, kindly regard and truthfulness are their five pillars. Doing good even to those who harm them, accepting defeat humbly and staying rich in character in poverty are their marks, says Valluvar.

Introduction

The chapter on Perfectness of Character belongs to the Porutpaal, in the section on Kudiyiyal, the miscellany of social life. "Saandraanmai" is the state of being a sanror, one in whom all good qualities are complete. Valluvar also calls it "saalbu". A sanror is not one with book learning alone; he is one in whom knowledge, restraint, love and truthfulness sit naturally.

The first couplet says one who takes up worth regards all good as duty. The second says the sanror's true beauty is character, not the body. The third names the five pillars: love, shame at wrong, generosity, kindly regard and truthfulness. The fourth lifts up non-killing and not backbiting. The fifth makes humility their weapon. The sixth makes humble acceptance of defeat the touchstone. The seventh asks for good even to those who harm. The eighth says poverty is no disgrace. The ninth calls those who do not swerve even at the end of an age the anchor of worth. The tenth ends: if sanrors fail, the earth cannot bear the burden.

In Hindu tradition these qualities are listed in the sixteenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita as the divine endowments: non-violence, truth, freedom from anger, renunciation, peace, not speaking ill of others, compassion to beings, gentleness and modesty. It is notable that the shame at wrong, abstaining from backbiting and non-killing that Valluvar names come in that very list. In the Mahabharata the life of Yudhishthira is taken as a living example of this chapter.

Commentators differ in some places. Most take "kadan" as duty; some take it as an obligation like a debt of gratitude. "Oppuravu" is read as keeping in step with the world, or helping others. "Aazhi" is taken by some as a wheel, by some as a ship's anchor, by some as the sea. In any case it means the firmness of the sanror.

In life today saandraanmai is not a quality of those in high office alone. A village teacher, a farmer who helps his neighbours beyond his means, a housewife who scorns no one, can all be sanrors. The chapter puts a question: how far can those around me trust and lean on me? That measure of trust is the measure of my own worth.

Valluvar's special message is that worth does not come from birth or wealth. The eighth couplet says that if worth is there, poverty is no disgrace. This is a message that gives everyone a chance. Training ourselves in small good acts every day is the way to become a sanror. As a pot fills by drops of water, worth fills by small virtues gathered together.

Chapter story

Yudhishthira and the Faithful Dog

The final journey of Yudhishthira is told in the Mahaprasthanika and Svargarohana Parvas of the Mahabharata. After the Kurukshetra war Yudhishthira ruled for a long time. When news came that Krishna had completed his incarnation and departed, the Pandavas handed the kingdom to Parikshit and set out with Draupadi for the Himalayas on the great final journey. A dog followed them. On the way Draupadi fell first, then Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bhima, one by one. Each time Yudhishthira held down his grief and walked on without looking back. When Bhima asked why they fell, he calmly gave the reasons: Draupadi had been partial to Arjuna; Sahadeva was proud of his wisdom; Nakula was proud of his beauty; Arjuna had boasted he would destroy his foes in a day, did not, and scorned other archers; and Bhima had boasted of his strength and eaten greedily. At last only he and the dog climbed the mountain.

Then Indra came down from the sky with a chariot and said, "Yudhishthira, your brothers and Draupadi have already gone to heaven. Climb in and enter heaven in your body." Yudhishthira bowed and said, "But this dog that followed me must come with me." Indra laughed: "There is no place for a dog in heaven. Will you give up the fame and the deathless state you have earned for this? Royal sage, leave it."

Yudhishthira refused, calm and firm. "I have no need of any joy gained by abandoning a creature that trusted me and took refuge in me. To forsake one who comes in fear, one who is devoted, one who is starving, is a great sin. I will never do it." Though Indra urged him again and again, his word did not change. With heaven within arm's reach he refused to climb without the dog.

Then the dog changed form and stood as Dharma himself. "Son, I am your father Dharma. Earlier, in the Dvaita forest, I tested you as the yaksha. Now I have tested your compassion once more. You have passed every test," he blessed. Indra and the gods led him to their radiant world. In Yudhishthira the whole of saandraanmai shows: duty, love, truth, kindly regard and shame at wrong, joined as one. Where fame and pleasure were within reach, he did not swerve from his principle. The tale shows that worth is to stand firm even for a small life when the great test comes.
