Explanation

As gold is tested by rubbing it on a touchstone, Valluvar asks what tests a person's worth. When victory comes everyone seems calm. It is when defeat comes that true character shows. And the anger and shame of being beaten by someone one reckons lower are most severe. One who accepts defeat gladly even there is the sanror.

"Thulaiyallaar" means those not equal, that is, those less than oneself in learning, office or age. It is not easy for one in a high position to lose to a lesser person and admit the truth, "he is abler than I." That needs a mind that has dropped arrogance. Defeat is not littleness; littleness is the inability to accept it.

Arjuna and the Kirata in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata is an example. When Lord Shiva came in the form of a hunter and fought Arjuna, Arjuna was bewildered to see his arrows fail against one he had reckoned an ordinary hunter. Yet he accepted defeat gladly, bowed and worshipped the Lord.

Commentators take "thulaiyallaar" as those lower than oneself, or those not one's equal. In either reading it means humility with arrogance dropped.

In daily life, even if a child beats us in a small argument, or a junior colleague offers a better idea, the test of worth is whether we have the mind to praise them and accept the loss. By accepting it we do not fall; we rise higher.

A story

Arjuna and the Hunter

Arjuna's story comes in the Kirata section of the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. During the exile Arjuna did severe penance on the Himalayas to gain the Pashupata weapon from Lord Shiva. To disturb his penance an asura named Muka came in the form of a wild boar. Arjuna took up his bow and shot. At the very same moment a hunter also shot. Both arrows struck the boar and felled it.

Arjuna said, "This boar is my mark; I shot first," and the hunter replied, "No, this is my prey." The argument turned into a fight. Arjuna rained arrows; all struck the hunter's body without harming him. The quiver was empty. Arjuna struck with his bow; the hunter snatched it away. He took his sword; it broke. At last he wrestled with bare hands. The hunter lifted and pressed him, and Arjuna fainted.

When he recovered, forgetting his strength, another thought rose in his heart. He made a lingam of earth, garlanded it with flowers and worshipped. He was startled to see the garland on the hunter's neck. Realising that the visitor was Lord Shiva himself, he fell at his feet and said, "Taking you for a poor hunter, I fought you. Forgive my fault."

Pleased, Shiva said, "Arjuna, I came to test your penance and restraint. Because you accepted defeat with humility, you are fit for the Pashupata." Arjuna's worth lay in accepting the defeat he suffered at the hands of one he thought lower. He did not rage and did not scorn the hunter. Dropping pride in his strength, he accepted the truth. This is the touchstone of worth that Valluvar speaks of.
