Explanation

Valluvar says that doing good even to those who have done harm is the peak of worth. To do good to one who did good is gratitude, which everyone can do. But to do only kind things even to those who harmed is a rare and lofty virtue. Without that, he says, the very name of worth has no meaning.

This goes against the natural inclination to take revenge. It is human to feel like opposing and hurting one who has harmed. But sanrors go beyond that nature and choose forgiveness and kindness. They do so not from weakness but, having strength, by choice. So the good they do removes enmity.

Draupadi and Ashvatthama in the Sauptika Parva of the Mahabharata is an example. She herself forgave and stopped the killing of the one who slew all her five sons in the night as they slept. This is a rare peak of worth.

Some commentators link this couplet with the one that says the best way to punish those who harm is to do them good until they feel shame. Both couplets say one path.

In our lives, even if we cannot wholly forgive one who has harmed us, not doing him harm and helping when need arises is the beginning of worth. It cuts the chain of evil.

A story

Draupadi Who Spared Ashvatthama

In the Sauptika Parva of the Mahabharata comes the grievous news of the night after the Kurukshetra war ended. After Duryodhana fell, Drona's son Ashvatthama resolved on revenge. At night he entered the Pandava camp and killed the five sons of Draupadi and Dhrishtadyumna as they slept. On learning this in the morning, Draupadi wailed in grief.

She vowed to her husbands, "If you do not bring me Ashvatthama's death, I will give up life without food." Bhima rushed off. Arjuna and Krishna followed. On the bank of the Ganga, among sages, Ashvatthama released a terrible weapon, the Brahmashiras; Arjuna sent a counter-weapon. When the sages intervened, Arjuna withdrew his. Ashvatthama could not, so he turned it towards the womb of Uttara. Krishna protected the child.

Ashvatthama was captured and brought before Draupadi. Bhima longed to kill him. But in the midst of her grief Draupadi said, "Release him. He is the son of our teacher. I know how cruel the grief for a son is. His mother Kripi is still alive. Let her not weep as I do."

They took the jewel on Ashvatthama's forehead and released him. Having lost the jewel, he went dim. Draupadi did not ask death for death but felt for another mother's sorrow. This is Valluvar's "doing only kind things even to those who harmed". What she did was a rare worth that restrained even the wish for revenge. One who knows a bereaved mother's pain will not give that pain to another mother.
