Explanation

This couplet says what the true wealth of the sanror is. "Gunanalam" is the goodness and beauty that come of good qualities. The world also esteems bodily beauty, wealth, office and high birth as "nalam", blessings. But the sanror does not even include them in his list of blessings. For him, blessing means only purity of heart and loftiness of conduct.

The reason is that all other blessings come and go. Bodily beauty fades in old age, wealth shrinks in a day, office changes. Character never leaves a person; it is the companion that goes with him to the end. So the wise take as blessing only what is lasting. While others spend their lives seeking other blessings, the sanror spends his seeking character.

A fine example in Hindu tradition is Karaikkal Ammaiyar, whose story Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam tells. She gave up a beautiful body and took love of God as her only blessing. Her story shows together the illusion of bodily beauty and the loftiness of goodness of character.

Some commentators take "ennalathu ullathuum andru" as "does not belong to any blessing", others as "no other blessing equals this". Both speak of the unmatched height of character.

In daily life too we should learn to value a person by conduct rather than dress, looks or office, and teach our children so. A person of character looks beautiful even in plain clothes; one without it looks empty even in silks.

A story

Karaikkal Ammaiyar

Sekkizhar tells the story of Karaikkal Ammaiyar in the Periya Puranam. Punithavathi, born the daughter of the merchant Dhanadatta in Karaikkal, had from childhood an unwavering love for Lord Shiva. She was given in marriage to Paramadattan, a merchant of Nagapattinam. In her household life she fed devotees of Shiva and lived in devotion.

One day, while at his trade, Paramadattan sent two mangoes home. Then a devotee of Shiva came to the door hungry. Punithavathi fed him and also gave him one mango. When Paramadattan came for his meal he ate the other mango and asked, "Where is the other?" At a loss, Punithavathi prayed to God. By His grace a mango appeared in her hand. She gave it to her husband. He marvelled at its rare taste and asked, "How did this come?" She told the truth. He did not believe it: "Then bring another one and show me." She prayed, another mango came, but it vanished from her hand. Fearing that she was not an ordinary woman but one with divine power, Paramadattan left her.

Punithavathi prayed, "This beauty of body was for my husband. I do not want it now. Give me the form of a ghoul so that I may sing and worship you." As she asked, her bodily beauty left her and she took a ghoul's form. In that very form she sang hymns such as the Arputha Thiruvandhadi. When she reached Mount Kailasa in the Himalayas, she was afraid to tread it with her feet and walked on her head. Lord Shiva welcomed her, calling, "Ammaiyae."

More than a beautiful body, a heart full of love and devotion was her true blessing. Thus the couplet "gunanalam sandror nalane" is fulfilled in her life. The world even today honours her character and songs, not her form.
