Explanation

"Oozhi" is the long age when the world ends and begins anew. Valluvar says that those who do not move from their path even if such an age itself changes are the ocean of worth. As the sea does not cross its limit, the sanror does not cross the limit of his path. Even if the world turns upside down, their character does not stir.

"Aazhi" has many meanings. Some say sea, some say command or limit, some say the anchor that holds a ship. Whichever meaning is taken, it points to firmness that stays. As the depth of the sea is not easily shaken, so is the firmness of the sanror.

The story of the sage Markandeya fits this. In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Bhagavata he is described as one who stayed unshaken in devotion even in the age's end. When the world sank in water in the great deluge, his hold did not slacken.

Some commentators take "oozhi" as a great natural upheaval, others as the changes of circumstance that time brings. Whether it is disaster or change of time, the couplet's idea is that the sanror does not alter his path.

In our lives, work may change, cities may change, generations may change, circumstances may be turned upside down. But if the principles we hold, truth, love and honesty, stay unchanged, we too can be an anchor for those around us. In an unstable world, a steady person becomes a support.

A story

Markandeya in the Great Deluge

The story of the sage Markandeya comes in the twelfth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana and in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. He was the son of the sage Mrikandu, fated to die at sixteen. But through unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva he received the boon of living for ever in the youth of sixteen. Through his life he stood steady in penance and dharma.

Once the world was drowned in the flood of dissolution. Mountains and forests vanished. There was only water everywhere. Markandeya wandered for a long time in that flood. He faced hunger, thirst, darkness and loneliness. Even when the world was destroyed he did not abandon his devotion and dharma. He went on remembering the Lord.

After long wandering he saw a banyan tree and a small child lying on its leaf. It is said to be Balamukunda. As he approached the child in wonder, it drew him in with its breath. Within the child's belly he saw the whole world, the oceans, the mountains and all beings. When the child breathed out, he came out and worshipped the Lord.

Though the end of the age destroyed the world, Markandeya's devotion was not destroyed. When all changed, he stayed in his path. So the world honours him as "chiranjeevi", the ever-living. In Tamil Nadu the story is also honoured of how at Tirukkadavur the Lord kicked Yama to protect Markandeya. This firmness set him as the anchor of worth.
