Knowing the Place · Itanaridhal

This chapter teaches that before beginning any undertaking one must study the nature of the place and act where it favours oneself. Like the crocodile that is strong in water and helpless on land, place can add to or take away strength, says Valluvar.

Introduction

After the chapter on knowing the time, Valluvar places the chapter on knowing the place. Just as the right moment is needed for an undertaking, so is the right place. Time is when, place is where. Only when the two join does the success of an undertaking become complete. The previous chapter's verse 'kaalam karudhi idaththaal seyin' brought the two together; this chapter is in a sense its commentary.

Place means more than a stretch of land. It is the field in which an action occurs, including its condition, resources, people, surroundings, opportunities and obstacles. For those who fight, each terrain, mountain, forest, river, fort and plain, helps or hinders in its own way. For the merchant the location of the market matters, for the student the place where a teacher is found, and for the farmer the nature of the soil. Knowing the place is therefore a knowledge common to kings and common people.

The first verse says that no undertaking should be begun, and no one belittled, until the place has been examined. The second says that even for the strong, a fortified position brings added gain. The third and fourth say that even the weak can win if they know the place and that even the strong can lose if they do not. The fifth and sixth explain through the images of the crocodile, the chariot and the ship that each has its own proper field. The seventh and eighth speak of how much the support of place means to courage and to small forces. The ninth and tenth close with the strength of one's native land and the fall of even a hero in unfamiliar ground.

The deepest truth of this chapter is that strength is not a fixed thing. A person's power grows or shrinks according to the place. In water the crocodile is king; on land it is easy prey. In the forest the tiger is king; in the sea it flounders. So what we need to know is not only our strength but the setting in which that strength will come to full flower. To distinguish where we are the crocodile and where we are the crocodile on dry ground is a basic skill of life.

In our day this applies to every person's choice of career. When someone chooses the field, city, organisation and team that fit his talent, he shines. The same talent is wasted where it does not fit. Parents choosing a school, young people seeking work and traders starting a business all do well to spend time thinking about place. Idanarithal is the art of finding the soil where one's powers can bloom.

Chapter story

Murugan on the Shore of Tiruchendur

From the Kanda Puranam: The asura Surapadman, made arrogant by the boons he had received from Lord Shiva, tormented the gods. He had built his capital Veeramahendrapuri on an island in the middle of the sea. The sea served as a moat to his fortress, and a land army could not easily approach him. The gods appealed to Shiva. Six sparks from Shiva's forehead eye became six children in the Saravana lake, and the Goddess Uma joined them into one: Murugan, the six-faced.

Murugan took charge as commander of the gods. In his army were Veerabahu and eight other heroes and many troops. Before setting out for war Murugan first studied the place. He learned that the fortress of Surapadman was ringed by sea and where the safe stretch of shore near it lay. He reached Tiruchendur on the southern coast with his army and set up camp there.

There were reasons for the choice of that place. It lay very close to the sea, on the shore facing the island city. It was a fitting site for the army to rest, obtain food and, if need be, withdraw. Moreover it was a place of the penance of sages, full of divine grace. Murugan, knowing the place, stationed the army there.

Before the fighting began, Murugan sent his commander Veerabahu as envoy. Veerabahu crossed the sea and reached Veeramahendrapuri. He delivered Murugan's message to Surapadman and asked him to free the gods and make peace. Surapadman refused. But Veerabahu came back having carefully learnt the layout of the city, its guards and the strength of its army. In a way the embassy was also a journey to study the place.

In the great war that followed, Murugan's army defeated Surapadman's sons and his brothers Simhamukha and Tarakasura. At last Surapadman himself entered the field. He worked many illusions. In the end he became a huge mango tree standing in the midst of the sea. This form was a place he had chosen: a tree rooted in the sea floor. But Murugan knew the way to strike that place: his Vel, which pierces any ground. He hurled it.

The Vel flew over the sea and split the mango tree in two. One half became a peacock and the other a rooster. The peacock became Murugan's mount, and the rooster his banner. Surapadman's pride was destroyed. The gods returned to heaven. At Tiruchendur, where the war was fought, Murugan still grants his grace in the seaside temple.

The asura placed his strength in a fortress ringed by the sea. Murugan chose the place best suited to his army's strength, studied the nature of the enemy's protected position and acted accordingly, and so he won. This Tamil tradition is a witness that those who act knowing the place can overcome even the strongest fortress.
