Explanation

Gold and gems adorn the body; shame adorns the personality. There is a subtle point in comparing naan to a jewel: a jewel pleases not only the wearer but those who see it. Likewise the presence of a shamefast person brings calm and respect to those around. The humility that shows in him lets others approach him without fear.

'Peedu nadai' is a proud gait. Joined to shame it looks dignified; without shame it looks arrogant and overbearing, and to the beholder it is a sickness. The gait is the same; one is a beauty and the other a disease. The difference lies only in whether there is naan within. Some people look high and mighty, yet walk proudly without any wincing about their improper deeds. People do not admire them; they are repelled. The verse names that state with the harsh word 'pini', disease, a sickness to society and to themselves.

Today we see people in power and fame hide their lapses and speak with arrogance. However polished their words, people's hearts refuse them. Whatever our station, it is the shame within our heart that gives grace to our bearing. A person in plain clothes without any jewels can still look lovely because of the calm on the face. The source of that calm is shame. That is why Valluvar says the ornament is not gold but naan. It is also a lesson about true beauty.

A story

Ravana and Vibhishana

This episode is from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana, king of Lanka, was a man of might, wealth and learning. He strode proudly on his ten heads. But for having carried off Sita he felt no shame at all.

His younger brother Vibhishana pleaded each time: "Brother, this is an unrighteous act. Send Sita back to Rama. Otherwise our whole clan will perish." Ravana laughed at his words. "You are a coward. I am the king of Lanka, and no one can question me," he said angrily.

Ravana's gait was always swaggering. When he walked through his court the ministers bowed their heads. But that bow was out of fear, not respect. Though his outward appearance shone, his lack of shame for his deeds sealed his downfall.

Vibhishana was a quiet man, with no swagger in his walk. Yet his heart felt shame for his brother's wrong. That shame turned him to dharma. He surrendered to Rama, and at the war's end he was crowned king of Lanka.

Ravana's proud stride lost its beauty and ended in ruin. Vibhishana's simple gait was adorned by dharma. The two brothers stand as the two poles of Valluvar's idea that shame is the ornament of the noble.

The scene of Vibhishana's surrender is honoured in the Ramayana tradition. Although the vanara warriors looked on him with suspicion, Rama received him with affection. This is proof that the shamefast man finds his ornament wherever he goes. Ravana's proud gait destroyed his own clan; Vibhishana's humble gait preserved its name.
