Introduction

This chapter, set within the Amaichiyal of the Porutpaal, deals with the rare responsibility of the envoy. An envoy stands in a foreign land as the voice of his king, and every word he speaks is taken as the king's own. Sometimes an envoy's speech prevents a war; sometimes one careless sentence begins it. That is why in ancient times a messenger was given great honour and great burden. Valluvar here gathers the qualities this task demands.

The first two verses set the foundations. Affection, noble birth and a manner that pleases rulers appear in the first; the second insists that affection, wisdom and a well-judged power of speech are indispensable. The third and fourth speak of learning and impressive bearing. The fifth says that to speak briefly, sweetly and without harshness is the nature of a good embassy. The sixth and seventh describe learning, fearlessness, and the sense to say the fitting word at the proper time and place.

The eighth verse points to three more gifts: purity, loyal companionship and courage. The envoy must be incorruptible, a true support to his state, and fearless of heart. The ninth shows the firmness not to let weak or degrading words pass the lips. The tenth reaches the peak: even when death threatens, the finest envoy does not fail in his duty to bring good to his master.

The meaning of the envoy has not faded. Diplomats, business negotiators, mediators between two sides in a dispute, even a relative who goes between two quarrelling members of a family, are in a sense messengers. For them, too, these ten verses can be a guide. The chapter reminds us that the power of the word is great, and that anyone who handles it needs both integrity and intelligence.

There is a subtlety in Valluvar placing this chapter under the counsellors. The minister gives advice, the general fights, and the envoy stands between the two and protects the state through words. The glory of the envoy is that what the sword cannot win, speech may win. That is why our literature honours Hanuman, Angada and Krishna as great messengers. None of them spoke for his own gain; each spoke for the good of the one who sent him. The ten verses of this chapter form the grammar of such pure service. Since every reader will at some time have to speak on someone's behalf, the chapter is of use to all.

Chapter story

The Lord as Sundarar's Messenger

From the Periya Puranam. Sundaramurti Nayanar, honoured as a friend of Lord Shiva, lived at Tiruvarur and was married to Paravai Nachiyar. Later, at Tiruvottriyur, he met Sangili and married her as well. The Periya Puranam tells that this brought great sorrow to Paravai. When Sundarar returned to Tiruvarur, she refused even to meet him. Her anger was deep, and the door was shut.

Sundarar was grieved. Realising the pain he had caused, he went to his divine friend and pleaded: 'Lord, my displeased Paravai must be calmed. You yourself must go to her as my messenger.' Accepting Sundarar's love, the Lord went to Paravai's house as envoy, as the Periya Puranam sings. When we think of the Lord going on this mission by night, we see how humbly a high office can be taken up.

The Lord came to Paravai's door and spoke for Sundarar. The first time Paravai's heart did not soften. Yet the Lord was not discouraged. With love and patience he went again. The second time her anger cooled. The love and purity in the messenger's words melted her heart. Sundarar and Paravai were reconciled.

This episode shows how much patience and affection an envoy needs. A message carried the first time to a person in anger may fail. The envoy must not lose heart. To go again at the right moment with the right word is the skill of the messenger.

Here, too, the Lord lays aside the pride of being master and stands as the voice of his devotee, speaking only for the good of the one who sent him. This is the soul of the verse that says the true envoy secures the good of his master. Devotional tradition praises it as God's easy approachability to his devotees; at the same time the qualities Valluvar names, love, patience and persistence, can be seen in the scene.

Even today, when a rift opens between two hearts, a person who understands speech, love and patience can go between them, and closed doors open. There should be no blame in his talk and no hurry. Affection and trust are all that is needed.

What deserves notice in this story is not only the humility with which the Lord went for his devotee but the persistence with which he did not hesitate to go a second time. It teaches that the messenger should not turn back after a first failure. The heart of an angry person does not melt in a day; the door opens only when a loving word, the right time and patience to try again are joined. After Sundarar and Paravai were reconciled, the whole town rejoiced, and people still sing of the embassy. It is a fine example of how great a harmony a humble embassy can create.

In the story of Sundarar, the friendship between the Lord and his devotee is especially celebrated, and the Lord's going as messenger is remembered with great affection in the Tamil devotional tradition. The point is that one who goes as messenger out of love, however exalted, makes himself humble. Valluvar's envoy is of just such humility and purity. He does not make himself large; he magnifies the good of his message.
