Shame · Naanutaimai

This chapter teaches that the inner blush at doing wrong is the true ornament of a decent person, and that a man without it lives like a wooden puppet. The noble would give up life before giving up their sense of shame.

Introduction

The second chapter of the Kudiyiyal, Naanudaimai, is about a subtle quality that holds a family and a lineage upright. The previous chapter spoke of the use of wealth. This one speaks of the purity of the mind that governs both wealth and learning. Naan is more than bashfulness. It is the heart's wincing when asked to do something improper, the bowed head after one has done it, and the hesitation before one does it. Old commentators defined it as 'shame at evil acts'.

The idea is not Tamil alone. In the Bhagavad Gita, chapter sixteen, when Krishna lists the divine qualities, fearlessness, purity, charity, self-restraint and truthfulness, he includes 'hri', modesty, the heart's reluctance to do what is improper. Valluvar gave the quality a chapter of its own in the Kudiyiyal because a household can endure only if its members keep this inner sense alive. Law and watchmen restrain from outside; naan restrains from within. Where the outer guard weakens, the inner guard protects the family.

The opening verse draws a subtle distinction. The worthy blush at improper deeds; a lovely-browed woman blushes out of natural modesty. These are to be seen as two different things, says Valluvar. Verses two and three say that food, clothing and shelter are common to all creatures, and it is naan that lifts humans above them. Verse four makes naan an ornament, and the walk of one without it a disease.

Verses five and six extend the reach of shame. Those who blush for others' disgrace as for their own are called the dwelling-place of modesty. The truly great would not accept even the wide earth if it could be won only by shameful means. Verse seven is the summit: the shamefast will give up their lives for the sake of shame, but never shame for the sake of life. Verse eight says that when a man does not blush for what makes others blush, dharma itself blushes for him.

The last two verses give a warning. Neglect of custom ruins one's family, but shamelessness burns all good. A person with no shame within walks like a wooden marionette moved by strings. He moves, but there is no life in the movement. In our age shame is sneered at as an old-fashioned virtue. Yet the sting we feel after doing wrong is the very life of our conscience. When that sting is gone, law alone remains and humanity is lost. This chapter asks us to guard that small, quiet voice.

Chapter story

Harishchandra's Resolve

This is the tale of King Harishchandra told in the Markandeya Purana and other Puranic traditions. Harishchandra of Ayodhya was famed throughout the world for speaking only the truth. The sage Vishvamitra, doubting his greatness, decided to test him. As the fee for a sacrifice he asked for the whole kingdom. Harishchandra did not refuse; he gave it happily.

The sage then asked for the balance of the fee. The king had nothing left, so in Kashi he sold himself, his wife Chandramati and his son Rohitashva to raise the money. Chandramati became a servant in a household. Harishchandra became the bondsman of a keeper of the cremation ground, collecting the dues for burning bodies.

One day a snake bit Rohitashva. Chandramati carried her son's body, weeping, to the cremation ground. Harishchandra recognised his wife and son, and his heart broke. Yet one thing stood clear in his mind: it was his duty to collect the dues. He told her firmly that he could not let her burn the body without payment.

After giving away the kingdom Harishchandra laid aside his royal robes and walked out of Ayodhya with his wife Chandramati and little son Rohitashva. The citizens wept. "Our king, take us with you," they begged. He answered quietly, "I am no king now. Until my debt is paid, let no one follow me." Vishvamitra stood there and reminded him that the fee he had named was still not fully paid.

Chandramati tried to tear off a portion of her sari and give it. Weeping, Harishchandra stepped forward to accept it. At that moment the gods appeared. Vishvamitra, Indra and Dharma Deva came and praised his resolve. Rohitashva rose alive; the kingdom was restored.

His work in the cremation ground was not easy. He lived with the smoke of fires burning day and night, faces of grief, hunger and solitude. Yet not one day did he fail his word. Even when no one was watching, he did his duty. That is the very sign of naan: the awareness that even if others do not see, one's own conscience does.

Valluvar's naanudaimai shines through this tale. Harishchandra considered breaking his word, becoming false, more shameful than losing his life. He felt no shame at losing a kingdom, but he felt shame at the thought of failing his promise.

Even before his own wife and before the grief of his son, he did not let go of his duty. That firmness is shame in its highest form: shame before the word one has given to oneself and to the world. He lived out that naan is greater than life.
