Explanation

This verse speaks of the joy of two senses: the joy of touch and the joy of hearing. Valluvar says children are the source of both.

First, touch. When a child climbs onto its mother's or father's lap and clasps the neck, the fullness that spreads through the body cannot be put in words. That touch eases weariness and worry in a moment.

Next, hearing. The phrase 'matru avar sol' refers to the children's speech. The questions they ask, the stories they tell, the songs they have learned and the small incidents they report are all a feast for the parents' ears.

Parimelazhagar separates the two as joy of the body and joy of the ear. Since the next verse speaks separately of prattle, 'sol' here may be taken to include the talk of older children as well.

There is another beauty in this verse. Among many pleasures, this one costs nothing and is easily had, and yet is the deepest. It is a joy that cannot be bought in a shop.

In today's busy life there is also a warning: parents must not lose these two joys by being lost in their phones. Being present with the whole heart when a child touches and speaks is what completes the joy.

In Tamil tradition, the story of Lord Murugan reciting the meaning of Pranava into the ear of his father Shiva is the divine form of this feeling.

A story

The Son Who Taught His Father

The Skanda Purana and the Tamil Shaiva tradition tell of a special event at Swamimalai. Once Brahma went to Kailasa. While everyone bowed to Lord Shiva and Uma, the young Lord Murugan stood without bowing to Brahma, though he saw him.

Murugan called Brahma. "You are in charge of the work of creation, are you not? What is the meaning of Pranava, that is, Om?" he asked. Brahma could not explain it. Murugan placed him in prison.

Creation stopped. The devas, troubled, appealed to Lord Shiva. Shiva called Murugan and said, "Release Brahma." Murugan refused: "He does not know the meaning of Om. How can one who does not know it be fit for the work of creation?"

Shiva smiled and asked, "Then tell me its meaning yourself." Murugan said, "I shall tell you when you ask as a student asks a teacher." Shiva bent close to his son and listened with attention to the meaning he spoke.

Murugan recited the secret meaning of Pranava into his father's ear. That is how Murugan came to be called Swaminatha, the lord even of the Lord. The place where this divine sport happened is renowned today as Swamimalai.

The scene of a father bending to hear what his son says beautifully shows the joy of the ear that Valluvar speaks of. It carries the lesson that an elder too can learn from a younger.

Shaivas and devotees of Murugan celebrate this event every year. It is the event in which the Lord of the world gave ear to a child's word.

சிந்தனைக்கு

ஒரு குழந்தை என்னிடம் பேசும்போது நான் உண்மையில் கேட்கிறேனா, அல்லது பதில் சொல்லக் காத்திருக்கிறேனா?

To reflect on

When a child speaks to me, am I really listening, or only waiting to reply?
