Explanation

The very first verse of the chapter begins with firm conviction. A person can gain many things: wealth, fame, rank, learning and health. Valluvar says that none of these equals gaining wise children, and he says 'yaam arivadhu illai', 'we know of none', in the voice of his own experience.

The key phrase here is 'arivu arindha'. Merely having a child is not the gain; gaining a child who knows what should be known is. Parimelazhagar explains it as one who knows the books worth knowing, that is, a child of learning and clear reason. More widely it points to the discernment that clearly tells good from bad.

There is another subtlety. 'Arivu arindha' can also mean one who knows what knowledge is. The self-knowledge that senses how much one knows and how much one does not is true knowledge. Such a child goes on learning without arrogance.

This verse should not be tied to a child's marks alone. A certificate from an institution is only a part of knowledge. Taking good decisions in life, getting along with others and correcting one's mistakes are also knowledge.

Parents must realise their share in this. A wise child is not made in a day. The words heard at home, the conduct seen and the stories received are all manure for it.

So the verse quietly says that creating an atmosphere in which a child grows wise is a greater gain than the bearing of the child. In the Ramayana, Dasharatha experienced this through his four wise sons.

A story

The Putrakameshti Sacrifice

The Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana begins with the great sorrow of King Dasharatha. He ruled Ayodhya justly and had wealth, army and fame, but he had no heir. As old age came on, his heart grew heavy. In his court he told his minister Sumantra and his family preceptor Vasishtha what was on his mind.

Sumantra recalled an old report. Sanatkumara had once said that through the sage Rishyashringa a Putrakameshti sacrifice would bring the king children. Dasharatha agreed and had Rishyashringa brought from the land of Anga. First the Ashvamedha sacrifice was done, and then the Putrakameshti.

From the fire of the sacrifice a great figure arose, holding in a golden vessel a sweet payasam. "This is the offering the gods have given you. Give it to your wives, and you will have children," it said and disappeared. Dasharatha received it with great joy and gave half to Kausalya, a part to Kaikeyi and two parts to Sumitra, says Valmiki.

In the month of Chaitra Rama was born, and then Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna. All Ayodhya turned into a festival. Dasharatha's heart was full at the sight of his children.

These sons were not mere heirs; they were people of learning and restraint. They studied under Vasishtha and Vishwamitra. Rama who gave up the kingdom for his father's word, Lakshmana who went to the forest for Rama, and Bharata who refused the throne and ruled in the name of Rama's sandals, each of them raised their father's honour.

Though Dasharatha died in later sorrow, Indian culture remembers even today how high a gain he had won. The very name 'father of Rama' stands as his everlasting fame.

To reflect on

When I wish good things for a child, do I wish first for understanding or for success?
