Explanation

People generally like to think that they are wiser than others. But this verse tells a great truth: the joy of seeing one's children wiser than oneself is no less than any other joy in the world.

The phrase 'thammin tham makkal arivudaimai' is very important. 'Thammin' means than themselves. When parents see a child surpass them, they feel pride, not jealousy. This is a very high maturity of mind.

Here Valluvar does not confine the sweetness to parents. By saying 'maa nilaththu mannuyirkkellaam inidhu' he extends it to the whole world. The reason is that each new generation of wise people makes the world a better place than the one before. So it is good for all living beings.

Parimelazhagar explains it as: that one's children know more than one knows is sweet not only to oneself but also to the living beings of the world. So it is not only a family's joy but a social good.

This verse is a challenge to parents and teachers. They should not keep children below themselves but allow them to grow beyond. A bird that keeps its young under its wing does not teach them to fly.

At the same time it places a duty on the children: to grow in learning while honouring their parents' love and labour. One who has learned must not become proud, but must remember the joy of his parents.

The story of Ashtavakra in the Mahabharata is a beautiful example. At a tender age he won where his father had lost, and rescued his father.

A story

Ashtavakra Who Rescued His Father

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata the sage Lomasha tells the Pandavas the story of Ashtavakra. Kahoda was a disciple of the sage Uddalaka, and married his teacher's daughter Sujata. During Sujata's pregnancy Kahoda was in the habit of reciting the Veda. One day the child in the womb said, "Father, there is a fault in your recitation."

Kahoda grew angry and cursed him: "Do you correct me even from the womb? You will be born bent in eight places." That is why the child was born with a body bent in eight places and was called Ashtavakra.

Some time later Kahoda, who had no wealth, went to the sacrifice conducted by King Janaka. There a scholar named Bandi had a rule that those who lost to him in debate were drowned in water. Kahoda lost to him and was drowned.

Ashtavakra grew up with his maternal uncle Shvetaketu. At the age of twelve he learned what had happened to his father. He went to Janaka's court. The gatekeepers said, "There is no place here for boys." Ashtavakra explained to them that wisdom is not in age or in grey hair, and went in.

In the court some laughed to see him come with his bent body. He told the king, "Those who laugh at the skin do not see the wisdom." The assembly fell silent. Then the debate with Bandi began. Ashtavakra answered every question Bandi put without delay. At last Bandi had no answer and was defeated.

Bandi said, "I have sent those I defeated to the sacrifice of Varuna. I shall bring them all back." Kahoda and all the others rose from the water. Seeing his son's wisdom, Kahoda was glad and embraced him. He told him to bathe in the river Samanga; when Ashtavakra rose from it his body was straight.
