Srimad Bhagavatam, Eighth CantoThe Rescue of Gajendra
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Eighth Canto. On Mount Trikuta lived Gajendra, king of elephants. One day, while bathing in a lake with his herd, a crocodile seized his leg.
For a long time Gajendra struggled with all his strength; the elephants of his herd could not help and drew away. When all his strength had failed, he remembered a hymn he had learned in a past life. Raising a lotus in his trunk, he surrendered with his whole heart, crying "O Primal Lord!"
Hearing that call, Thirumal rushed on Garuda, struck down the crocodile with his discus and saved Gajendra. In the very moment he gave himself wholly to the Lord, Gajendra was freed.
