Mahabharata, Adi ParvaDrupada's Careless Words
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. In their youth, Drona and Drupada, prince of Panchala, were close friends who studied together at the hermitage of the sage Bharadvaja.
Later Drupada became king, while Drona suffered in poverty. Unable even to buy milk for his son, Drona went to the royal court in search of his old friend and greeted him, "My friend!" Drupada answered dismissively: "How can there be friendship between a king and a pauper? That passed away with time."
Those careless words became a wound in Drona's heart that never healed. Later he became the teacher at Hastinapura and, through his students, defeated Drupada and took half his kingdom. That enmity ran through the generations all the way to Kurukshetra.
