Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth CantoKing Prithu and the Earth
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto. Prithu, who became king after the tyrant Vena, found the land in a terrible famine. The earth had hidden all her riches within herself.
Prithu took up his bow and pursued the earth; she fled in the form of a cow and at last surrendered to him. "The wicked wasted my riches, so I hid them. Give me a fitting calf and one to milk me, and I will give everything. Level the land, and the rainwater will stay."
Prithu made Manu the calf and milked all the grains from the earth. Then he levelled the hills, founded villages and towns, and began agriculture. Because he tended the earth, she is called Prithvi after his name.
