Mahabharata, Udyoga ParvaGandhari's Counsel to Duryodhana
From the Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva. Krishna's mission of peace was on the verge of failing; Duryodhana would listen to no one. Dhritarashtra summoned Gandhari to the assembly to counsel their son.
Gandhari spoke plainly to her son: "One who has not conquered his senses cannot rule a kingdom. Give the Pandavas what is theirs. Listen to your elders." Duryodhana stormed out of the assembly in anger and even plotted to seize Krishna.
Vidura had warned long before: "To save a clan, one may give up one man." But out of affection, Dhritarashtra kept going along with his obstinate son. That going-along ended in the ruin of all his hundred sons.
