Mahabharata, Vana ParvaBhima and Hanuman's Tail
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. During the exile, Bhima went to Mount Gandhamadana to find the saugandhika flower Draupadi had asked for. Proud of his strength, he strode along noisily, snapping trees as he went.
On the path lay an old monkey with its tail stretched across the way. "Move aside!" Bhima ordered arrogantly. The monkey replied, "I am old and cannot rise. Move my tail yourself and go on."
Bhima tried to lift the tail with one hand; it did not budge. With both hands and all his strength he could not move it even an inch. When he bowed his head in shame, he learned that the monkey was his elder brother Hanuman. Hanuman embraced him lovingly and blessed him. The one who bragged of his strength learned humility that day.
