Explanation

The word panidhal means not only a bow of the head but lowliness of heart. The verse climbs in two steps. First Valluvar says humility is good for everyone: the poor, the teacher, the student. Then he adds that for the rich it is another form of wealth. Commentators read the closing phrase slightly differently. Some take it as meaning that humility is like added riches for the wealthy, and others that it is a distinct beauty on them. Both come to the same sense.

Why does humility matter more for the rich? When a poor man bows, it may be need; when a rich man bows, it is choice. The world passes lightly over humility that comes from need, but it wonders at humility that comes by choice. Money can breed arrogance, and when someone overcomes that pull, people honour him with real warmth.

The lesson applies to the entrepreneur, the officer, the doctor and the teacher alike. A leader who, instead of admiring his own success, thanks those who made him is the leader around whom people gladly cooperate. For his wealth, humility is a fragrance. Without it, riches only advertise themselves; with it, they invite trust. Valluvar sees that prosperity tests character more severely than poverty does, and those who pass the test are rare and loved.

A story

Krishna at the Rajasuya

This scene comes from the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. Yudhishthira, king of Indraprastha, performed the Rajasuya sacrifice. Kings and sages from many lands gathered. Duties were assigned to many people: supervising the food, handling the gifts, welcoming the learned guests, and so on.

Krishna, the lord of Dvaraka and one of the mightiest kings of the age, had come as well. When Yudhishthira asked what task he would take, Krishna chose one himself. Tradition says he took up the washing of the guests' feet and the clearing of the used leaf plates. He commanded vast armies and wealth, yet in that great sacrifice he busied himself with the humblest of services.

Those who sat there were astonished. When a man of wealth and power moves in humility, hearts melt. People said the very place of the sacrifice seemed to grow purer.

At the end, when the question arose who should receive the first honour, Bhishma proposed Krishna. When Shishupala rose to oppose and insult him, Krishna stayed calm. The assembly saw that his humility had not lessened his worth but raised it.

Those who had watched him wash their feet remembered it long after the gold and ceremony of the sacrifice had been forgotten. The scene shows the relation between humility and wealth. When everyone is striving to lift himself up, a great person who bends down to serve turns that service into the finest ornament of his wealth.

To reflect on

In the midst of my own success, for whom could I bend down and serve?
