Explanation

In Tamil tradition the mountain is the image of steadiness, because it is large and does not move. Here Valluvar goes beyond even that image: the person who stays restrained and keeps his station is greater than a mountain. The word nilai, station, has been understood in two ways. Some take it as the stage of life or duty proper to one's family and calling, and others as one's moral standing. Both point to the same thing, which is standing firm in one's own right path.

A mountain's greatness is in its bulk, but a human being's greatness is in firmness. A storm does not move the mountain, and neither do praise, blame, temptation or fear move the person who keeps his place. Though he may be small in body, he casts a large shadow.

We see this in offices and families today. A person who does not give up honesty under pressure, or who looks calmly for a solution when everyone else is afraid, becomes the anchor of that place. People around him find themselves trusting him without knowing why. This does not come from rank. It comes from restraint kept over years. That is why Valluvar says such a person is more imposing than a mountain: his greatness is not in what he occupies but in what he cannot be moved from.

A story

Dhruva's Unmoving Penance

This story comes from the Bhagavata Purana. King Uttanapada had two queens. Suniti's son was Dhruva, and Suruchi's son was Uttama. One day little Dhruva wanted to climb on to his father's lap. Suruchi, nearby, spoke harshly: "This lap belongs to the son born of me. If you want it, worship the Lord and be born from my womb in another life." The king stood silent.

Dhruva ran weeping to his mother. Suniti held him and said, "My son, in sorrow the Lord's feet are our refuge." Those words sank deep into the five-year-old's mind, and he set out for the forest.

On the way the sage Narada met him. "Child, you are still small. Forget the insult and go home." Dhruva bowed and replied, "Thank you for your love, sage, but my mind is made up. Show me the way." Narada was pleased. He taught him the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" and sent him to Madhuvana to practise austerity.

In Madhuvana Dhruva stood on one foot in tapas. Hunger, cold, fear of wild beasts and terrifying phantoms raised by illusion did not shake him. His mind was fixed on the feet of Hari. The Purana says the heat of his penance filled the world. At last Vishnu appeared and granted him his boon.

Dhruva received all he wished, and also the honour of shining as the Pole Star, the fixed and highest place. A child who did not stray from his resolve became an unmoving light in the sky.
