Explanation

The old commentators explain this verse in two ways. One is that if even a single evil word carries a harmful meaning or result, all the other good a person has done ceases to be good. The other is that if a speech has harmful effect, even his charitable deeds are tainted by it. Both reach the same conclusion: one harmful word spoken by the tongue can dim many good deeds.

One may compare it to a pot of milk. A single drop of poison spoils the whole pot. Over the years a person may have lived righteously, given gifts and helped many. Yet a single cruel word, a false accusation or a betrayal of trust can break the respect he gathered. People remember that last bitter word before they remember his kindnesses.

Two lessons follow. First, we must not rely on our good deeds and grow careless in speech. Second, we should be gentle about judging others who slip once, and not forget all their goodness because of a single wrong word. We can be firm about the harm done and still remember the person's good. The verse thus protects us on both sides: it asks us to be watchful in our own speaking, and it asks for patience when we hear another's misstep. Either way, words carry a weight greater than their length.

A story

Manthara's Words

This scene comes from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. King Dasharatha had decided to crown Rama. The whole city was filled with joy. Queen Kaikeyi was delighted to hear it, for she loved Rama as dearly as her own son Bharata. She gave the maid who brought the news her own necklace as a reward.

But Manthara, the hunchbacked maid who served Kaikeyi, could not bear to see this joy. She went to Kaikeyi and said, "What is there to rejoice at? When Rama is king, Bharata will be as good as a servant. Kausalya will rise in honour and you will have to stand bowing." There was poison in every word.

Kaikeyi at first refused. "Rama is as dear to me as my son. His coronation is a joy to me." But Manthara said the same things again and again. Little by little the poison seeped into Kaikeyi's mind. A heart once full of love filled with suspicion. She recalled the two boons the king had once granted her.

She asked the king for those boons: that Rama go to the forest for fourteen years and that Bharata be crowned. Dasharatha was stricken and died of grief. Ayodhya drowned in tears. Kaikeyi, who once loved Rama like a mother, became the target of the world's blame, and even Bharata rebuked her.

A few words from Manthara broke the happiness of a family, the good name of a mother and the peace of a kingdom all at once. The good Kaikeyi had done was dimmed by the evil that came through those words. The story shows plainly the strength of a harmful word.
