Mahabharata, Adi ParvaBhima and the Demon Baka
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. After escaping the house of lac, the Pandavas and Kunti lived in hiding in a brahmin's house in the town of Ekachakra. A demon named Baka tormented the town: every day it had to send him a cartload of food, two buffaloes and a man.
One day the turn fell to the brahmin family who had sheltered them. Seeing them weep, Kunti said, 'My son Bhima will go.'
Bhima's hunger was so great that he was called Vrikodara, 'wolf-bellied'. He drove the cart of food into the forest and, right in front of the demon, began eating the meal meant for Baka himself. When the furious demon rushed at him, Bhima fought and killed him and saved the town.
Even a hero like Bhima was ruled by his stomach. But he used his strength to save the lives of others.
