Explanation

However lush a tree on a riverbank grows, one flood can wash away its roots and bring it down. A life of influence at the king's side is the same; on the day the king's mind changes, it collapses.

But nothing equals living by the plough. It depends on no one's favour, only on the soil and one's own labour. Every other calling, says Avvaiyar, has some flaw.

Thiruvalluvar too praises farming: 'However the world turns, it follows the plough' (Kural 1031). One who stands on their own labour need bow to no one.

Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda

Sita Rises from the Furrow

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Janaka, king of Mithila, was a great ruler and a sage as well. To prepare the ground for a sacrifice, he took the plough in his own hands and tilled the field. He saw nothing beneath a king in holding a plough.

As he ploughed, a baby girl rose from the furrow his ploughshare had cut. Janaka took her as his daughter and raised her. A furrow is called sita, and so he named her Sita. It is Janaka himself who tells this story to Vishwamitra.

Because she was the daughter of the earth, she was also called Bhumija. One of the noblest women the world has known was born at the tip of a plough. Farming is no lowly work; the divine itself came to the world by way of it.
