Muppathaam aantalavil moonrarru oruporulaith / Thappaamal thannul peraanaayin - seppum / Kalaiyalavae aakumaam kaarikaiyaar thangkal / Mulaiyalavae aakumaam mooppu

Meaning

If by the age of thirty one has not removed the three faults and realised within the one supreme reality, then one's learning withers with age, like a woman's youthful beauty.

Explanation

If by the age of thirty a person has not removed the three faults and realised the one supreme reality within, says Avvaiyar, all the arts they have learned will sag with age, as youthful beauty does.

Many commentators explain 'the three' as desire, anger and delusion; in the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition they are also taken as the three malas, or impurities: anava, karma and maya. Either way, they are veils that cover the heart.

The number thirty is not a deadline but an urgent call. The inward journey should begin while we still have the strength and clarity of youth. If we put it off till 'later', that later may never come.

Katha Upanishad

Nachiketa at the House of Death

From the Katha Upanishad. A brahmin named Vajashravas, claiming to give away all his wealth at a sacrifice, gave away old cows that no longer gave milk. His young son Nachiketa was troubled to see it and asked three times, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' The angry father replied, 'I give you to Death!'

To keep his father's word, Nachiketa went to the abode of Yama, the lord of death. Yama was away, and the boy waited three days without food. On his return, Yama offered him three boons for having kept a guest waiting.

For the third boon Nachiketa asked: 'When a person dies, some say he exists and some say he does not. Tell me the truth.' To test him, Yama offered long life, vast wealth, kingdoms and every pleasure instead. Nachiketa firmly refused: 'All these wear away by tomorrow. I want only that truth.'

Pleased, Yama taught him the knowledge of the Self. A boy, in his youth, chose the one reality over all the pleasures of the world.

To reflect on

Have you been putting off the inward journey until 'later'? Could you give it five minutes today?
