From the Pandharpur tradition (Panduranga Mahatmya)Vitthala Standing on the Brick
From the Pandharpur tradition. In his youth Pundalika neglected his aged parents and listened only to his wife. On a pilgrimage to Kashi he stayed at the hermitage of the sage Kukkuta, and seeing the greatness of the sage's service to his own parents, his heart changed. From then on he made the service of his parents his worship.
One day, pleased by his devotion, Krishna came to the door of his hut. Pundalika was massaging his parents' feet. Though he knew the Lord had come, he did not stop. He tossed out a brick lying nearby and said, "Lord, please stand on this for a while. I will come when I have finished serving my parents."
The Lord was not angry. He stood on the brick with his hands on his hips and waited. When his parents had fallen asleep, Pundalika came and bowed to Him. Asked what boon he wanted, he prayed, "Stay here in this very form and bless your devotees."
From that day, the tradition says, Vitthala stands at Pandharpur on a brick with his hands on his hips. The name Vitthala itself is explained as 'the one who stands on the brick'.
To rise and see one's parents in the morning is sweet; and where parents are served, God Himself comes seeking.
