Meaning

Mother, father, a crore of relatives, mountains of wealth, great fame, ruling the earth, children, being a guru, disciples, siddhi powers, daily vows, bathing in every sacred river: can any of these stop Yama's summons? Knowing them to be ties of the marketplace, I have caught hold of Your two feet. Whoever Your heart is set on, a glance from the corner of Your eye is enough for me.

Explanation

The ninth song puts everything the world values under one great question: parents, countless relatives, mountains of wealth, fame, kingship, children, standing as a guru, disciples, occult powers, vows, bathing in sacred rivers. On the day Yama's summons comes, which of these will hold it back?

'Ties of the marketplace' is a beautiful phrase. People gather at a market in the morning and scatter by evening; worldly bonds too come together for a while and then part. Seeing this, the devotee holds onto something that stays: the Lord's two feet.

The last line is humility at its height: 'Whoever Your heart is set on, a glance from the corner of Your eye is enough for me.' He does not ask for the Lord's full attention; one glance is enough.

Katha Upanishad

Nachiketa at the House of Yama

From the Katha Upanishad. The sage Vajashravas performed a great sacrifice and gave away old cows that no longer gave milk. His son Nachiketa was troubled by this and asked again and again, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' In anger his father said, 'I give you to Yama.'

Nachiketa went to Yama's house and waited three days. When Yama returned he granted the boy three boons. For the third, Nachiketa asked, 'What becomes of a person after death?' Yama tried to avoid it: 'I will give you sons and grandsons who live a hundred years, cattle, elephants, gold, a vast kingdom, beautiful companions. Only do not ask this question.'

Nachiketa refused: 'All these last only till tomorrow. When you come, none of them will stand. Keep your riches.' Seeing his firmness, Yama taught him the wisdom of the undying Self. What the ninth song says, that no wealth can stop Yama's summons, Nachiketa said to Yama's face.

To reflect on

Can you take a minute to think about which of your ties are 'market ties' and which will last?
