Explanation

A churning stick never rests; it turns this way and that. In the same way the soul turns between birth and death, joy and sorrow. Bhattar uses this everyday kitchen scene to state a great truth.

The Mother's feet are worshipped by all three gods. Can those feet, the refuge of the gods themselves, not give one small soul 'a state that never fails'? The words 'karudhu kandaay' are gentle: 'It is enough that you think of me.'

Sthala Purana of Thirukkadaiyur, Markandeya tradition

Markandeya and the Defeat of Death

From the sthala purana of Thirukkadaiyur. The sage Mrikandu and his wife prayed for a child. The Lord asked them, 'Do you want an ordinary son who lives long, or a wise son who lives only sixteen years?' They chose the wise son. He was Markandeya.

When his sixteenth year came, Markandeya held fast to the lingam at Thirukkadaiyur in worship. When Yama, the god of death, threw his noose, it circled the lingam too. At once Shiva emerged from the lingam and kicked Yama away. That is why the Lord there is called Kalasamhara Murti, the destroyer of death. Markandeya was granted to live forever at sixteen.

This happened in the very temple where Abirami dwells. The place itself bears witness that there is 'a state that never fails', beyond the churning of birth and death.
