Explanation

The five hands are His four arms and His trunk. The goad is the tool that controls an elephant; it shows that He is the one who tames the wild elephant of our mind. The noose is the rope of love with which He draws the devotee to Himself. The eight shoulders belong to some meditation forms of Ganesha; commentators say Avvaiyar names both five hands and eight shoulders to show that His form is not one but many.

The line 'the dark blue form that has made its home in my heart' matters. Ganesha is usually worshipped with a red or golden body. But the form Avvaiyar sees is not outside her; it lives within her heart, and there, in meditation, its colour is blue.

'Turiya beyond words' is the fourth state, beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep. The Mandukya Upanishad calls it turiya. Having described His whole form, Avvaiyar ends by saying that this very form is the wonder of that state which words cannot reach. Like the Karpaga tree of heaven that grants whatever is asked, He is the Karpaga elephant.

Traditional Ganesha story

Kubera's Feast

A traditional story. Kubera, lord of wealth, wanted to show off his riches. He went to Kailash and invited Shiva and Parvati to a feast at his city of Alakapuri. Seeing the pride in his heart, Shiva said, 'I will send my son Ganapati instead.'

Young Ganapati went to the feast. Kubera served Him. Ganapati ate, and ate, and kept on eating. All the food in the kitchens was gone. The palace storehouses were emptied. Then Ganapati began to eat the golden vessels and the palace ornaments. 'I am still hungry,' He said.

Trembling with fear, Kubera ran to Kailash and fell at Shiva's feet. Shiva smiled, gave him a handful of roasted rice and said, 'Offer this, humbly.' Kubera set aside his pride and gave that single handful of rice to Ganapati with love. The moment Ganapati ate it, His hunger was satisfied.

The treasure-chest belly that holds the universe is never filled by wealth, only by love. The wish-granting elephant asks for just one thing in return: humility.

To reflect on

The wish-granting elephant can give anything. What do you ask of Him? And what could you offer Him that matters more than that?
