Meaning

Taking the form of a guru in this world, You placed Your holy feet upon me and gladly showed me, in a way that never fades, 'This is the way, this is the truth.' With Your tusk as a weapon You destroyed my cruel karma. You poured teaching that never cloys into my ear and showed me the clarity of a wisdom one never tires of.

Explanation

In the Shaiva tradition, one of the ways a guru initiates a disciple is the initiation of the feet: the guru places his foot on the disciple's head. 'Placing His holy feet' refers to this. That the Lord Himself comes in human form as the guru is a central idea of Shaiva Siddhanta.

The 'tusk weapon' is Ganesha's broken tusk, which He used both as a weapon and as a pen. Here it is the weapon that cuts down the devotee's cruel karma. The same tusk that destroyed an outer enemy now destroys the enemy within.

'Never cloys' and 'never tires of' are both words of taste. Too many sweets become sickly. But the guru's teaching and wisdom never become too much, however much one takes in. 'Pouring into my ear' recalls a mother feeding milk to her child, and links back to the word 'as a mother' in the previous section.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva tradition

Vyasa Speaks, Ganesha Writes

From the Mahabharata tradition. The sage Vyasa saw the whole great epic of the Mahabharata within his mind. But who could write it down? Brahma told him, 'Pray to Ganesha.'

When Vyasa prayed, Ganesha agreed, on one condition: 'Once I begin to write, my pen must never stop. You must dictate without a pause.' Vyasa set a condition too: 'You must write each verse only after you have fully understood its meaning.'

The writing began. Every so often Vyasa spoke an especially difficult verse. While Ganesha pondered its meaning, Vyasa composed the next passage in his mind. At one point Ganesha's pen broke. So that the writing would not stop, without a moment's hesitation He broke off His own tusk and went on writing with it.

So the greatest epic in the world was written with Ganesha's tusk. The 'tusk weapon' of the Agaval is not only a weapon that destroys enemies; it is also the pen that writes down wisdom.
