Palani temple tradition, Tamil oral traditionThe Fruit of Wisdom
A Tamil traditional story. One day the sage Narada brought a wondrous mango to Kailash. It was the fruit of wisdom. To whom should it be given, Ganesha or Murugan? Shiva set a contest: 'The fruit goes to whoever first goes around the world.'
Murugan at once mounted his peacock and flew off. He sped around mountains, seas and lands. Ganesha's mount was a little mouse. He did not hurry. Calmly He rose and walked three times around His parents, Shiva and Parvati, and bowed to them. 'You are my world,' He said.
The fruit went to Ganesha. When Murugan returned from circling the world and saw this, he left Kailash in anger and went to the hill of Palani. Shiva and Parvati consoled him, saying, 'You yourself are the fruit' (pazham nee), and tradition says that is how the place came to be called Palani.
Wisdom is not won by running around outside; it is won by circling the source within. Turning the senses inward instead of letting them run outward is the way this section teaches.
