Meaning

In this body of nine gates, You showed me how to close the doors of the five senses with a single mantra. You held the mind steady in the six centres, as with a goad, and cut off all speech. You taught me the syllables of the ida and pingala channels, and at the end showed me the crown of the head, reached through the sushumna.

Explanation

The Bhagavad Gita (5.13) calls the body a city of nine gates: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, the mouth, and the two lower openings. Through these gates the mind runs outward. Closing them 'with a single mantra' means that when the mind is held on one mantra, the senses fall quiet of themselves.

The six centres are muladhara, svadhishthana, manipura, anahata, vishuddhi and ajna. The phrase 'state of the goad' is lovely: the very goad in Ganesha's hand becomes the tool that steadies the mind. Only when speech stops can one hear within.

The left channel is ida, the right is pingala, and the central one is sushumna. The yoga texts teach that breath flows alternately through ida and pingala, and that when it unites in sushumna the mind becomes still. Avvaiyar does not say she learned these from books; she says Ganesha Himself 'made them known' and 'showed' them. This is the language of experience.

Gokarna temple purana (Ramayana tradition)

Ravana's Atmalinga at Gokarna

From the temple tradition of Gokarna. Ravana, king of Lanka, performed fierce penance and won from Shiva His very Atmalinga, the linga of His own self. Shiva said, 'Do not set it down until you reach Lanka. Wherever it is set down, there it will stay forever.'

The gods feared that if the linga reached Lanka, Ravana would become invincible, and they prayed to Ganesha. As Ravana came near Gokarna, evening fell. Ravana never missed his evening prayers, and he looked for someone to hold the linga. Just then a boy came by, tending goats. It was Ganesha.

'I will call you three times,' said the boy. 'If you do not come back by then, I will set it down.' As soon as Ravana stepped into the water, the boy quickly called three times and set the linga on the ground. Ravana ran back and pulled with all his strength, but the linga would not move. It stands at Gokarna to this day as Mahabaleshwara.

Ganesha, guardian of the door, knows what must be set firmly within. Standing at the gates of the senses, it is He who sets the Lord steadily inside us.

To reflect on

Today, spend ten minutes without speaking, eyes closed, simply watching your breath. What changes do you notice?
