Explanation

This couplet carries out a search for what is lasting in the world. Gold, land, fort and army are all worn away by time. None of them is 'pondraadhu nirpadhu', that which stands without perishing. 'Pondral' means to perish. Valluvar concludes that only fame stands undying.

The phrase 'ondraa ulagaththu uyarndha pugazh' has two readings. One takes it as fame that is highest in the world, matched by nothing. The other takes 'ondraa' as 'unmatching', that is, fame that stands apart from worldly things and does not belong with them. Both bring out the unique character of renown.

Why does fame not perish? Because it does not live in objects; it lives in memory and speech. A building may fall, yet the name of its builder may go on as a story. Of many kings and benefactors of the past, we know only their deeds.

The lesson is not to set our heart too much on the perishable but to work for what lasts. Setting aside even a small part of our effort for the good of others yields a lasting return. Money can be spent within a single generation; a good name stands as a lamp for many generations.

A story

Harishchandra's Truth

This is the story of Harishchandra, told in the Markandeya Purana. Harishchandra, king of Ayodhya, held truth dearer than life. The sage Vishwamitra resolved to test him. On the strength of a promise, he received the whole kingdom from him as a gift, and then demanded more gold as the customary fee.

Unable to pay, Harishchandra sold his wife Chandramati and his son Rohitashva, and at last sold himself, to serve as keeper of the cremation ground at Kashi. No one could see a king reduced to such servitude, collecting dues at a burning ground, without feeling pity.

One day Chandramati came there carrying her son, who had died of a snakebite. She recognised her husband, but he stood firm in his duty: 'The body cannot be burned without the fee.' She had nothing to pay and offered half of her own cloth as the tax.

At that instant the gods appeared. They declared the test complete and brought Rohitashva back to life. Harishchandra's lost kingdom and honour returned to him, and the heavenly beings blessed him for never abandoning truth.

Harishchandra lost kingdom, wealth and family. Yet the name of one who stood for truth could not be erased by the rule of any emperor. To show that only fame is 'pondraadhu nirpadhu', that which stands undying, no better witness is needed. Even today we call a person who speaks truth a 'Harishchandra'.
