Explanation

In this couplet Valluvar places the person of far-reaching fame even above those called 'pulavar'. Many commentators take 'pulavar' here to mean the wise, the sages and ascetics, while a few take it to mean poets. 'Puththel ulagu' is the world of the gods. The depth of the verse is that even that world will honour the man whose fame stretches over the earth more than it honours the sages who practise penance.

Why so? A sage in penance reaches his own good through his own effort. A person of fame has done deeds that help the lives of many, and so has benefited the whole world. That is the logic of the verse. The poet-reading adds that such a man will be praised by the gods even beyond what poets can sing of him.

Whichever reading is taken, the message is that work done for the common good stands higher than work done for one's own good alone. This does not ask us to belittle penance or learning. It reminds us that they must be joined to a contribution to the world.

In study, research or a profession, the habit of asking how it serves people will help us grow.

A story

Bhagiratha and the Ganga

This tale is told in the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana. The sixty thousand sons of Sagara, an ancestor of Rama, were reduced to ashes by the wrath of the sage Kapila. For them to attain liberation, the waters of the heavenly Ganga had to touch their ashes. Amshuman and Dilipa, of Sagara's line, tried but could not bring this about.

Dilipa's son Bhagiratha gave up his kingdom and began severe penance. After a thousand years, Brahma appeared and granted that the Ganga would descend. But the earth could not bear the force of her fall; only Lord Shiva could. So Brahma said.

Bhagiratha again performed penance and prayed to Shiva. Shiva received the Ganga in his matted locks and released her to the earth in gentle streams. Bhagiratha led the way in his chariot, the Ganga followed, touched the ashes of his ancestors and freed them. That is why the Ganga is also called Bhagirathi.

What Bhagiratha asked for was not for himself. By his effort a great river gave life to millions. Even today we call a mighty undertaking a 'Bhagiratha effort'. Many sages did penance, but it is Bhagiratha's name that is joined for ever with the river.

Gods and men alike still honour the one who gave the fruit of his penance to the world. Fame was never what he sought; it is what remained of an effort made for the people.
