Explanation

This closing couplet of the chapter gives a definition of life. We easily take life to mean the body moving and the breath going. Valluvar does not accept that. Those who live without blame and with renown are the ones who live.

Two lines stand side by side. 'Vasai ozhiya vaazhvaare vaazhvaar' is the positive thought; 'isai ozhiya vaazhvaare vaazhaadhavar' is the negative. Together they complete the meaning. Absence of blame is the foundation; renown is the fruit that grows upon it.

'Vaazhaadhavar', those who have not lived, is a warning. One who earns no good name is as good as dead. That seems stern, yet it points to the purpose of life. The depth of the verse is that everyone who has received a human birth should do at least some good to the world.

Here Valluvar gathers up the whole chapter: live by giving, live without disgrace, and leave a lasting name. One who puts these three into practice has lived.

Questions about the meaning of life arise in many people today. This couplet gives a plain answer: do good to others, and guard yourself from blame. The nine couplets before this one come together in it: giving, the nature of fame, its endurance, the use of birth, self-examination, legacy, the richness of the land. All reach one conclusion, that living is a choice we make each day. The couplet measures life by quality rather than by the number of days: one who lights the way for many in twenty years has lived more than one who lived a hundred and did no good.

A story

Manu Needhi Cholan

This is the story of Manu Needhi Chola, honoured in the Periya Puranam and in Tamil tradition. He ruled from Tiruvarur and was known above all for justice. A bell of petition hung at his palace gate: anyone seeking justice could ring it, and the king would come and hear the complaint.

One day his son Veedhi Vidangan went out in a chariot. As it ran fast, a young calf was caught under the wheel and died. The mother cow, robbed of her calf, ran to the palace and rang the bell with her horn. The king came at the sound and saw the cow's tears. When he learned what had happened, his heart trembled.

His ministers pleaded, 'O king, this was not a deliberate crime. Atonement may be made through gifts.' The king would not accept this. 'A mother grieves for her calf, and I understand her sorrow. My son must suffer the same.' According to the Periya Puranam, the minister who was to carry out this terrible order could not bring himself to do it and gave up his life; the king then made ready to drive the chariot over his own son.

At that moment, it is told, the Lord of Tiruvarur, Thyagesa, showed his grace. The dead calf, the minister and the prince all returned to life.

Manu Needhi Chola was ready even to lose his son. In his justice there was no difference between the heir to the throne and a calf. That is why his name is still honoured in Tamil Nadu as a symbol of justice, and the tale is remembered in the tradition of the Tiruvarur temple.

The couplet's conclusion, that a life without blame and with fame is the life that truly deserves the name, fits him exactly.
