Explanation

In this couplet Valluvar describes fame as 'echcham', what remains after one is gone. Children and property are also called echcham, but Valluvar presents fame as the finest legacy. A life that leaves behind no such legacy is, before the world, a disgrace.

'Vasai enpa': 'enpa' means 'they say'. It is not one man's private opinion but the common view of the wise. The phrase 'vaiyaththaarkku ellaam', for all the people of the world, shows that this is a measure for everyone, not for one class or caste.

This should not be taken as scorn for those who lack fame. It can be read as a reminder that even if we do no great deeds, each of us should leave at least some small good in our own surroundings. Planting a tree, helping a child's schooling, holding a family together with love: these too are echcham.

The couplet raises the question of what will remain in the place where we lived once we are not there. Wealth may pass to children; the memory of what good we did passes to many.

Age, wealth and rank are no obstacle to earning this legacy. That is the simple invitation of the verse. Looked at closely, echcham is not only fame but a responsibility we each accept. The roads, books, temples and tanks left by those before us hold us up, and our thanks to them is to leave something for the next generation. The stress of the couplet lies not in accusation but in continuity: each of us is a link in the chain that passes on what we received.

A story

The Village Tank and Old Muthaiah

In a small town in the Tamil south, centred on a modest Shiva temple, lived an old man named Muthaiah. He had no children and only a little land. Yet on every Karthigai festival he lit a clay lamp at the temple door and gave hot sundal to the worshippers.

Once the rains failed and the village tank dried up. People had to walk miles for drinking water. Muthaiah grieved to see it. He sold his small field and asked that the money be used to desilt the tank. The villagers were amazed. 'You will be left with nothing,' they said. 'One meal a day is enough for me,' he replied. 'If the tank fills, the whole village will live.'

Each villager gave a little, and the tank was deepened. In the next monsoon it filled. On its bank a small Pillaiyar shrine also came up, and Muthaiah would sit there talking with those who came to draw water.

Years later Muthaiah died. The whole village gathered for his funeral, and the elders decided to give his name to the tank. Even now, on Karthigai night a thousand lamps are lit on its bank, and the first is always his.

Newcomers to the village hear the tank's name and ask the story of the man behind it. He left no children, yet he made a whole village his children.

It is a simple tale, but it reminds us how simple, and how noble, the deed that creates an 'echcham', a legacy, can be.
