Explanation

This couplet can sound harsh at first hearing. Why should Valluvar say that those without renown would be better unborn? We should think it through calmly. 'Thondrin pugazhodu thondruga' is more a loving plea than a command. A human birth is rare; to receive it and then waste it without a single good deed is a loss. That is the sense.

Commentators read 'pugazhodu thondruga' in two ways. Some take it as being born with a good name, that is, into a reputable family; many take it as earning fame by the way one lives. The second reading suits Valluvar's purpose better, since birth is not in our hands while the manner of living is.

'Thondraamai nandru', not being born is better, should not be read as contempt for birth itself. It is a forceful way of pointing to the emptiness of a life that does nothing worth remembering. Think of a good seed that perishes without bearing fruit; it is a sadder thing than a seed that never sprouted.

The couplet can also be a question to ask on waking: whom shall I do some good to today? The feeling that a day passing without even one small good deed is a loss will spur us on. Every child's birth is greeted with joy by a family, and what gives that joy its meaning is the good the child grows up to do. Life is a great opportunity, and to let it pass unused is an injustice to that joy.

A story

Dhruva's Penance

Dhruva's story is told in the Bhagavata Purana. King Uttanapada had two queens, Suniti and Suruchi. Suniti's son was Dhruva, and Suruchi's was Uttama. One day, seeing Uttama seated on his father's lap, five-year-old Dhruva tried to climb up as well. Suruchi stopped him and said harshly, 'One not born of my womb is not fit for this lap. If you want it, do penance to Vishnu and be born from me in your next birth.'

Weeping, Dhruva ran to his mother. Suniti comforted him: 'My son, the cure for your sorrow is the grace of Vishnu. For those who reach him, every place is theirs.' The boy took the words to heart and set out for the forest. On the way the sage Narada tested him. 'You are a child; you cannot bear the hardships of the forest. Go back.' Dhruva firmly refused, and Narada taught him the mantra, 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya'.

At Madhuvana on the banks of the Yamuna, Dhruva did penance, living first on fruit, then on leaves, then on water, and at last on air alone. The heat of his austerity troubled the worlds, and Vishnu appeared before him. Dhruva had meant to ask for his father's lap, but at the sight of the Lord that small wish melted away.

Vishnu granted him an unshakeable station: the Pole Star, fixed in the sky. Even now, sailors look to that star to find their way, and the other stars circle round it.

A small boy's renown began with being denied a place on his father's lap. He turned his loss into effort instead of bitterness. The tale is a living illustration of the couplet's plea that one who is born should be born, that is, live, with renown.

To reflect on

Is there some hurt or setback in your life that you could turn, as Dhruva did, into a purpose that outlasts you?
