Explanation

In this couplet Valluvar makes the land itself speak. Our tradition holds that the character of a people is tied to the richness of their country. Many old tales say that rain falls short under a king who strays from dharma and that places where good people live flourish. This couplet is an echo of that belief.

'Vasaiyilaa vanpayan' has two readings: faultless, abundant yield; or abundant fruit that is gained without blame. In both, the natural richness of the land is said to wane. 'Yaakkai' means the body; the phrase speaks of those who live as mere bodies without a good name.

Seen in practical terms, the verse has another meaning. If irresponsible people poison land and water, the land does lose its fertility. If a society as a whole will not stand on the path of dharma, every one of its members suffers. This is not only belief but a matter of experience.

The people without renown may be understood as those who live for themselves alone and do no good to others. When such people multiply, a whole country weakens. The other side of the couplet is that the presence of good people is a blessing to the soil itself.

The verse asks us what change we are bringing to the village and land where we live. The word 'poruththa', 'bore', is worth noticing: the land carries people and bears with them, even those who do no good. But there is a limit to that patience, and that is the warning of the couplet. We may also think of how we treat land and water each day.

A story

Vena and Prithu

This story is told in the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana. Vena, son of King Anga, came to regard himself as a god once he became king. He banned sacrifices and worship. 'Worship me,' he decreed. 'No other deity is needed.' The sages advised him again and again, but he would not listen.

Under his unrighteous rule the land dried up. With the sacrifices stopped, the rains fell short, and the people starved. At last the sages, by the power of their penance, destroyed Vena. Fearing the chaos of a kingless land, they churned his body: first a figure full of wickedness came forth, and then, as they churned the right arm, the radiant Prithu appeared.

Prithu became king and ruled lovingly. When he found that in his righteous reign the earth would not yield her produce, he took up his bow. Prithvi, the earth goddess, ran in the form of a cow. As Prithu pursued her she cried in fear, 'If you destroy me, where will food for your people come from?' Prithu approached her gently, levelled the hills and made the land fit for ploughing. The earth, as a cow, gave milk to Prithu and yielded crops, fruits and riches.

That is why the earth is called Prithvi, and Prithu's daughter, Bhargavi. The same land was barren under Vena and fruitful under Prithu. The land had not changed; the ruler had.

How well this fits the couplet: the land that bears the unrenowned, loses its rich yield. Under Prithu's rule people ploughed the soil and founded villages and cities, and land that had been wilderness became fit to live in; the Puranas therefore mark his age as the beginning of civilised life. Some tellings add that even Vena's descendants were reformed under Prithu, which shows that one good leader can change a whole country.
