Explanation

This is the final conclusion of the previous two couplets. Forgetting anger toward anyone means forgetting it wholly. The reason is that evils come to birth from it. Valluvar's choice of the word marathal, "forgetting", is subtle. Suppression means pressing down what is within; forgetting means giving it no room at all.

That anger is the birthplace of evils is a deep idea. Murder, quarrel, separation and slander are children of anger. Wars and family splits are its continuation. The Gita says delusion is born from anger; Valluvar says evils are born.

Yaarmaattum, "toward anyone", includes everyone: strong, weak, friend, enemy. There is no exemption from the rule. Commentators explain that even on seeing an evil deed, rather than anger toward the person, one needs the maturity to oppose the act and forgive the person.

In daily life this is a hard discipline. But one who has the habit of forgetting anger escapes many evils on his own. If we close the one door of anger, many evil rooms stay unopened. It is a simple way of protecting our minds.

One may ask how to forget anger. Commentators and tradition suggest some ways: breathing deeply when anger rises, counting, remembering God, and thinking of the other person's situation. The last relates to Valluvar's compassion. In a mind that feels others' pain, anger finds it hard to stay.

A story

The Anger of Parashurama

The Puranas and the Mahabharata relate the story of Parashurama. He was the son of the sage Jamadagni and is honoured as one of Vishnu's incarnations. Once a king, Kartavirya Arjuna, came to Jamadagni's hermitage. By the power of the wish-granting cow Kamadhenu there, the household feasted him and his army. Seeing that wonderful cow, the king, in greed, took it away by force, as tradition says.

On learning this, Parashurama was enraged. He killed Kartavirya in battle and recovered the cow. This might be considered just. But to avenge it, Kartavirya's sons killed Jamadagni. His father's death swelled Parashurama's anger further.

The result of that anger grew into a great catastrophe. The Puranas say he destroyed royal dynasties on earth twenty-one times. Anger against one wrong became a vast cycle: destruction, revenge, more destruction. In the end he is said to have performed penance and regretted his deeds.

Later, in the Ramayana, Parashurama meets Rama. Having come in anger on learning that Rama had broken Shiva's bow, he calmed on seeing Rama's humility and power, and went to Mount Mahendra to do penance, says Valmiki.

Parashurama's story is a major illustration of "Forget anger toward anyone, for evils arise from it." Even a just anger, uncontrolled, spreads into limitless harm. We may count how many lives and how many families were destroyed as a result.

To reflect on

Think of a quarrel that began over something small and grew far beyond it: where could anger have been left behind?
