Explanation

This couplet states with confidence the benefit of removing anger. "If one does not think of anger in his mind", then "all that he desired will be attained at once." The earlier couplets spoke of anger's evil; this one speaks of the good of removing it.

How is this possible? A mind free of anger is like clear water. With a clear mind a person thinks correctly, makes right decisions and wins the trust and love of others. His relations strengthen and his efforts succeed without spoiling. In this way the absence of anger opens the way for his wishes to be fulfilled.

Another explanation: anger itself is the great obstacle in his mind. When that obstacle is gone, his wishes are fulfilled of themselves. Hence the word udan, "at once". Removing anger is a key.

From a spiritual view commentators take it higher: for one without anger, knowledge, austerity and liberation also come. From an everyday view we can notice how smoothly a day's tasks go when we live a day without anger. We can try this small experiment.

In the phrase ullaththaal ullaan, the words ullam and ullaan again appear with wordplay. One who does not think of it in the mind is one who gives anger no room to arise even as a thought. Anger arises as a thought before it becomes an act. One who stops that very thought is highly trained. In such a clear mind good thoughts stay, and they become deeds as well.

A story

Prahlada's Forbearance

The seventh book of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Prahlada. He was the son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, but from childhood a devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu declared himself God and forbade the name of Vishnu. Seeing his son defy the ban, he was seized by fierce anger.

Hiranyakashipu tormented Prahlada in many ways. He had him thrown from a mountaintop, trampled by elephants, bitten by snakes, given poison and cast into fire. Each time Prahlada stayed unmoved, thinking of Vishnu. No anger arose in his mind against his father. He looked on his father's ignorance with compassion.

At last Hiranyakashipu asked, "Is your Vishnu in this pillar?" and struck the pillar with his mace. From the pillar Vishnu appeared as Narasimha and destroyed Hiranyakashipu. Later, when even the gods feared Narasimha's fierceness and could not bear it, Prahlada went lovingly before him and praised him. His calm soothed even Narasimha's wrath.

Vishnu told Prahlada to ask a boon. Prahlada asked neither wealth nor a kingdom. The Purana says he prayed that his father's sins be forgiven and that no desire should arise in him. Vishnu granted his father a good destiny, and gave him the kingdom and steadfast devotion.

The story explains the couplet "If one does not entertain anger in his mind, everything he has wished for is attained at once." Prahlada never held anger in his heart, and all he asked for was given.
