Explanation

The final couplet of the chapter compares two states in the starkest terms. In the first half, irandhaar irandhaar anaiyar says that those consumed by anger are like the dead. Though they live in body, having lost knowledge, love and joy they are as if dead. In the second half, "those who abandoned anger are equal to renunciates".

The word irandhaar, "the dead", is repeated, and likewise thurandhaar, "those who gave up". This is not just verbal pleasure; it presses the central idea. If someone loses the good things of life through anger, he is already like one dead.

Commentators take "the dead" in two ways. Some say they are like the dead, unfeeling, and do harm to others. Others say they are those heading toward destruction. The idea is the same.

To compare one who has given up anger with ascetics is an honour. An ascetic gives up home and wealth; one who gives up anger gives up something rarer. So even in household life, one who conquers anger can reach a height equal to the ascetic. This is the ideal of the chapter.

For thurandhaar thunai most commentators give thunai the sense of "equal". Some take thunai as "companion". If so, it means those who have given up anger become fit to stand as companions of renunciates. In both senses their height is plain. The couplet gives us a clear goal in life.

A story

Yudhishthira Speaks on Forbearance

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas, having lost the game of dice, had to live thirteen years in the forest. One day in the Dvaita forest Draupadi spoke to Yudhishthira with a broken heart. She wept thinking of the insult done to her in the assembly and of the hardships they suffered in the forest. "After all this, why does your anger not rise?" she asked.

Draupadi said: "A kshatriya must have anger at the proper time. Patience is not always good. Your brothers' valour is going to waste." There was justice in her argument. Yudhishthira did not brush it aside; he explained his view in a way that would comfort her.

Yudhishthira said: "Anger destroys a person. An angry person knows neither what should be done nor what should not. He will even kill his teacher and ruin himself. Forbearance is dharma, forbearance is truth, forbearance is the Veda. Those with forbearance conquer all worlds. One who conquers the angry conquers the world." This speech is known as the famed kshama section of the Mahabharata.

Draupadi answered further, and Bhima too argued that anger was needed. Yet Yudhishthira did not change his stand. We may remember that when the time came a just war was fought. The story does not say simply that anger is always wrong; it stresses a quality of governing it with knowledge.

Yudhishthira's words echo the couplet "The dead are like the dead; those who abandon anger are equal to renunciates." His word, that one who gives up anger conquers the world, agrees with Valluvar's word that one who has removed anger equals an ascetic.

Where do you confuse anger with strength, and what would real strength do in that situation?
